The Open University, together with the Institute of Coding, is running a two day practical workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The workshop is intended for all, especially those who are new to machine learning.
The workshop will give you practical experience with using modern machine learning tools to analyse various real-world datasets, and will give you an understanding of the strengths and limitations of machine learning, and some possible impacts these tools could have on society.
The workshop has been designed for people without any machine learning or AI knowledge or experience. The resources are created so that even if you are not familiar with Python you will be able to still gain experience of machine learning tools and understand how to apply example machine learning tools. If you are an experienced programmer and have more advanced programming skills you will be able to understand and gain a deeper knowledge about AI and machine learning. Please note this is not a ‘learning how to programme’ workshop but you will develop some programming experience during the two days.

- An introduction to artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the challenges with AI in society
- Hands-on walk through of how artificial neural networks operate

- Hands-on walk through of training a complex artificial neural network on real-world image data
- Exercise applying your understanding to a different real-world image dataset
- Recap on the day
- Presentation on AI in practice, analysing the responses of medical detection dogs to improve human health
- Hands-on walk through of using artificial neural networks to analyse time-series data
- Lunch
- Introduction to different techniques for improving the performance of artificial neural networks
- Exercise of applying optimisation techniques to improve the performance of your trained neural networks. There will be a prize for the best performing network!

Cost: Free. Lunch will be provided.
Requirements: You need not have any prior experience with artificial intelligence or machine learning.
You must bring a laptop for the practical exercises. (You will not need to install any software)
