Hacking Club Mate "imatate"

Hacking Club Mate "imatate"

Read about the end result here

Join me when I start brewing my first batch of Club Mate. Inspired by a podcast from chaos radio express on the topic "Hackerbrausen" (Hacker's soda, listen here) I want to try this by myself.

So far I have bought all the necessary ingrediends and tools to get started. And with the help from Jan (@janl) I can even carbonate the end result :)

When? Where?

Wednesday 29th of June around 7pm at @co_up coworking space

Words of caution

COFFEINE IS A LETHAL DRUG. JUST A SLIGHT OVERDOSE OR INPROPER HANDLING OF CAFFEINE CAN BE FATAL. DO NOT USE COFFEINE IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. EVERYTHING YOU DO IS ON YOUR OWN RISK. ALL THE INFORMATION, ESPECIALLY AMOUNTS, INGRIDIENTS AND COMBINATION OF THESE IS PROVIDED FOR MY PERSONAL INFORMATION ONLY.

imatate

The recipe I have in mind is a selection of the things I found appealing from other open mate recipes. Also I had the idea of brewing a "macca mate". Check out my proposed recipes below.

* 11L water
* 85g green mate tea
* 1/2 cup of cane sugar molasse
* 2 cups raw cane sugar
* 1.5g caffeine powder
* 1/2 tablespoon of citric acid

maca mate

* replace the caffeine powder with 2 teaspoons of maca powder

The brewing process

I have taken the brewing process form the other recipes. It seems to be quite same for all open mates. The only modifier I can see is the brewing time of the tea. I think the tea shall brew longer to create a stronger mate flavor.

Heat the water but do not let it boil (Dave-Mate suggests 75ºC) and cook the tea for 10 minutes (Dave-Mate suggests 5 minutes).
Filter the tea in order to remove the sediment, repeat if needed.
Add the extra ingredients and stir until they completely dissolve.
Carbonate (works best when the liquid is cooled).

Tools

A big pot
Heating plates
A frigde
A special accuracy weighing machine
Soda Maxx to carbonate

Other open mate recipes

Dave-Mate from Makezine

1.25g (1/4 tsp.) guarana
0.6125g (1/8 tsp.) citric acid
Drop of orange bitters.

Open Mate Soda from Pittsburgh

3 gallons water
85g Chai mate tea (from Teavana)
2.5 cups ‘raw’ cane sugar
1.5g caffeine powder (handle with care!)
CO2 (to taste)

Open Mate Beta 2 from Interlock Rochester

3 gallons of water
3oz yerba mate tea
2c sugar

0.5t citric acid

The original Club Mate ingrediends

Oh, it's acutally called "Maca". You can find more information about it on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lepidium_meyenii (in german: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maca_(Pflanze) )
