First, a little disclaimer. English isn’t my native language (I’m Dutch) I’m also not a professional writer of any kind. So some grammatical mistakes are guaranteed. I’m a freelance interaction designer that just wants to share his opinion on the smartphone updates.

I own a 2012 iPhone 5 and today I decided that I won’t be buying a new iPhone. I do like the new iPhone’s, it’s just that I don’t see the added value for me to buy a new phone. And I think I’m not the only one in this situation. My “old” iPhone 5 holds up perfectly to my current needs. And I say “current needs” because “Back in the day” I would basically try out all the apps and play all the games. But Today more than 80% of does apps are long gone. Either I lost interest or they made a really good mobile website that does the job just fine. Today, next to the native apps like Safari and mail, I only regularly use Reddit, Youtube and the mirror apps for Sketch and Photoshop. I have other apps installed, but does are just there when I need them. You never know when you might need that QR scanner. Wrong! You never need a QR scanner! Delete! Delete!
That sad I don’t really need the newest A10 processor or a double photo lens in my daily use. It would be nice, and boy do does photo’s taken with an iPhone 7 Plus look sweet! But I don’t need it. And that made me conclude that maybe, maybe, the smartphone hardware has reached his full potential. At least the innovation of the hardware has.
Basically today’s smartphones have reached fridges status. Fridges cool down your food. Some cool it beter, but in the end they all do the same. There is really no big innovation left to take it to the next level.
Yeah sure, some companies slap on an android tablet, so you can leave your loved one a “cold” message. Because nothing says I love you more than having the patience to use some old bad designed interface on a fridge to write a love message. But in the end thats just combining two products instead of really innovating.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, in hardware the smartphones don’t have not much to offer anymore. No big surprises other than some regular updates every year. As we’ve already seen with the iPhone 4, 5, 6 and every other computer or laptop. But the software they still have a lot of potential. And this will start to play a much bigger part for new smartphone users that will have to choose between iPhone or Android Phones (Sorry Microsoft you’re out)
I’m real curious (both on a personal level and a professional level) on how Apple wil solve some of the future interface design challenges. Lucky the iPhone 5 is still able to run the new iOS 10. But I’m afraid that with the next iOS release the iPhone 5 won’t be supported. And I will be somewhat be forced to dig deep into my wallet and fork over almost €800,- to be save for another 4 years.
I can only hope that they bring out a new iPhone SE by then, because lets be honest, the form factor of the iPhone 5 is the best. ;-)
