Introduction

In this article, I will discuss Berries, a feature that was introduced in the Pokémon Gold and Silver games around 20 years ago. However, much like the number of virtual monsters that consume said Berries, the number of available Berries, as well as their respective uses, has grown over the course of time. By the end of this article, you should be able to make use of the full potential of Berries during your journey across the Alola region.

1. Locations

You will find a manifold variety of Berries throughout the Alola region. The vast majority of them can be found under specific palm trees, are occasionally guarded by feasting Crabrawler, or can be stolen from wild Pokémon via the move Thief, whereas others can only be obtained from NPCs or even from certain events. Down below you can find a complete list in alphabetical order of all of the Berries that are currently available in the Generation 7 games, as well as the locations you can obtain them in:

2. Poké Pelago Harvests

Your Poké Pelago's Isle Aplenny allows you to plant and harvest more Berries. Once you have developed your Isle Aplenny to the point where it has reached Phase 3, you will be able to plant up to 18 Berries at once. During Phase 1, you can only plant up to 6 Berries, and during Phase 2, you can only plant up to 12 Berries, hence why it is well worth the time and effort to develop your Isle Alpenny fully. Berries will require either 24, 48, or, in some cases, even 72 hours. You can, however, speed up the ripening process by placing Poké Beans into the small crate. One Plain Bean adds 20 minutes to the counter, one Patterned Bean adds 1 hour, and one Rainbow Bean adds 2 hours. The crate of a Phase 3 Isle Aplenny can hold up to 50 Poké Beans! Down below you can find a complete list in alphabetical order of all of the Berries that are currently available in the Generation 7 games, as well as their respective ripening times:

3. Effects

Berries can fulfill an entire range of different purposes for your Pokémon: refilling its health, replenishing the PP of its moves, raising its friendship level, reducing the number of invested EVs in one of its stats, raising a stat during battles, and even reducing the damage caused by an incoming super effective move. You name it! It is also worth noting that Pokémon with the Gluttony ability will consume some Berries when their health drops to 50%, as opposed to 25%. In most cases, your Pokémon will not be able to consume their Berries when they are facing an opposing Pokémon with the Unnerve ability.
4. Further uses for Berries

While the previous paragraphs of this article mainly described the beneficial effects that Berries can have when your Pokémon consume them, such as sponging a super effective hit and regaining health during battles, the rest of this article will place the emphasis on a number of other clever uses for Berries.

4.a Natural Gift

The move Natural Gift is an example of how a Pokémon can make use of Berries to dish out damage as opposed to just passively using them to sponge an incoming super effective move, regain health, or replenish the PP of a certain move. Both the type and the power of Natural Gift depend on the Berry that the user is holding. Down below you can find a complete list of all of the Berries that are currently available in the Generation 7 games, sorted by Natural Gift's resulting typing and Base Power:

4.c Infinite SOS chains

As we reach the end of this article, I would like to share one more clever use for a very specific Berry: the Leppa Berry.

As you may already know, the Leppa Berry replenishes 10 PP of one of your Pokémon's 4 moves to help prevent it from having to use Struggle. However, the following trick will actually let a wild Pokémon make use of this Berry in order force it to call for help endlessly! Under normal circumstances, a wild Pokémon would only be able to consume this Berry once, granting your SOS chain up to 10 extra turns before the Pokémon is eliminated by Struggle or before you have to use another Pokémon as the caller. However, Pokémon like Phantump and Trevenant have access to the ability Harvest as well as the Egg move Bestow and the tutor moves Trick and Skill Swap that you can get in both the ORAS and USM games. First, let your Phantump or Trevenant hold the Leppa Berry and pass it to the wild Pokémon that you want to chain via either Bestow or Trick. On the next turn, pass your Pokémon's Harvest ability to the wild Pokémon, hence creating a Pokémon that continues to generate infinite Leppa Berries and thus never runs out of PP, keeping your chain going for as long as you want. This strategy can be used if you use SOS chaining for EV training, but it can also be used to hunt for Hidden Ability Pokémon efficiently, and it should also be beneficial for the Shiny hunters among our readers! Once your SOS chain has fulfilled its purpose, you can harvest the fruits of your work even further (literally) by getting your Leppa Berry back, either via Trick or by using another Pokémon from your party that knows the move Thief. So, what are you waiting for? Go out there and hunt without having to worry about the caller Pokémon being defeated by Struggle ever again!

Conclusion

I hope that I helped you understand Berries and the manifold range of their respective uses a bit better. Who knows? Maybe you even learned something that you had been unaware of up until now!
