Questions

  • Should we do two big projects that use Neocities and WordPress?
  • Does each student have an email address?
  • What is the age range of the students?

Ideas

  • Place students in pairs
  • Encourage student to think of their code as disposable as we'll be starting each class fresh. (This may change after the second or third class?)

Class Structure

  • 10 - 15 women in the class with basic computer skills.
  • Students are using PCs
  • Students will start each class with the same code example, copied from Github.

Christine

  • Create cheat sheet that summarizes the first class.
  • Bring copies of the cheat sheet to pass out.

Shayna

  • Replace screenshots in the first class sssignment with PC-based screenshots.

Steph

  • Bring name tags and markers

Lessons From Our Roxbury Class:

  • The mix of Macs and PCs was painful.
  • People printed off and brought in the slides.
  • Students interacting with their email is often slow as they may have forgotten their password, where an email was saved, etc.

First Class Review

  • Classroom is very small but we made it work.
  • We had 11 students
  • Debel (sp?) translated for students that speak Spanish
  • Having the cheat sheet was AWESOME! It helped the students be slightly more indepdendent as they could copy from the examples.
  • Speaking slowly for the translator forced us to move through the material at a slower rate. This may have contributed to students leaving with a better grasp on basic concepts than other first classes we've taught (IMHO).
  • I enjoyed giving the students a 15 minute break (in this case, to eat pizza) during the middle of class.

Christine

  • Translate Class 1 Slides to Spanish
  • Translate Class 1 Cheat Sheet to Spanish
  • Translate Class 2 Slides to Spanish
  • Create Class 2 Cheat Sheet
  • Translate Class 2 Cheat Sheet to Spanish
  • Print copies of the Class 1 Cheat Sheet - Spanish
  • Print copies of the Class 2 Cheat Sheet - English
  • Print copies of the Class 2 Cheat Sheet - Spanish

Shayna

  • Investigate if we can spead up the computer that is to the right of the door. Perhaps show up early or email Deborah for assistance?
