ANNOUNCEMENTS
Summer 2019 TA Applications Now Open
We're looking for excellent candidates to apply by March 23 at https://www.cs.ubc.ca/ta. Be sure to fill out the appropriate application (undergraduate vs. graduate) for the term you are interested in. Submitting by the deadline is best, but if you submit afterward, the earlier you submit, the more likely it will be considered. If you have some special reason to think the instructor of a course wants *you* for their TA, please apply and then ask that instructor to log in to www.cs.ubc.ca/ta and comment on your awesome application. For our formal job ad, see the bulletin board outside ICCS 201.
CPSC 491 Interactive Digital Media Practicum Course
The Interactive Digital Media Practicum Course is now accepting applications for the May-Aug 2019 session. CPSC 491 is a 6-credit course. It's open to UBC undergraduates who meet the eligibility requirements, but students in CS major and minor programs are especially encouraged to apply. Feedback from previous students suggests that it's a pretty awesome experience. CSSS 2019-2020 Executive Nominations

The CSSS is running elections for the 2019-2020 executive team! Want to contribute to the community, or become an overlord over CS students? Get a nomination form! Candidates will need to fill out nomination forms before March 15th. Forms can be picked up at The Cube (ICICS 021). Campaigning is optional, but encouraged. Voting will occur on March 18th and 22nd. MAPS 2019 Programming Competition

MAPS is an open, online, 5-hour, ICPC-style programming competition organized through Mount Allison University and hosted on Kattis. Women in Data Science Conference

The Global Women in Data Science (WiDS) Conference aims to inspire and educate data scientists worldwide, regardless of gender, and support women in the field. This annual one-day technical conference provides an opportunity to hear about the latest data science-related research and applications in a broad set of domains. It is open to all genders. There will be 3 speakers followed by a career panel with 6 or so data science professionals, videos from Stanford's main event, food, and a networking session.

SUS Science Student Recognition Awards
The Science Student Recognition Awards Night is held every year, this year on March 21st, to celebrate the achievements of students in Science. We encourage science students to nominate their classmates or themselves for the following awards:
Science Student Recognition Award: 5 monetary non-academic awards of $400 each to recognize individuals who demonstrate exceptional levels of extracurricular involvement. Nomination form
Undergraduate Teaching Award: non-monetary awards for undergraduate Peer Tutors or Teaching Assistants who have showcased exceptional efforts for their peers. Nomination form
SUS Club Awards: 4 awards for science clubs that have demonstrated strong leadership skills in their community. Nomination form

Last Call for Undergraduate Research Participants – Indigenous Initiatives at CTLT

The In/Relation team is seeking undergraduate students to participate in a focus group regarding your experiences learning Indigenous topics in the classroom. No prior knowledge of First Nations and Indigenous studies is necessary to participate, but if you have this knowledge or perspective, we also encourage you to attend. Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarships in Software Engineering
Do you want a scholarship of up to €49,000 for a Masters in Computer Science while studying in 2 EU Countries? Diversity in Math Undergraduate Summer School at UBC

Applications are now open for "Diversity in Math", a two-week outreach summer program devoted to enhancing the presence of under-represented groups in STEM fields. The program is open to female-identified undergraduate students studying mathematics or a related discipline such as computer science, physics and statistics. The purpose of this program is to introduce the undergraduate participants to a wide variety of professions and careers. Mentorship is an important component of the program. Undergraduate participants are expected to interact with senior mathematicians in academia and industry, and also act as mentors for high school students around the Lower Mainland who are considering a STEM-based career. The application deadline is April 1, 2019.
Announcing the 1st Annual CS-Can Student Symposium
The student and postdoc advisory committee (SPAC) of Computer Science Canada (CS-Can | Info-Can) is organizing the 1st Annual CS-Can Student Symposium in conjunction with the CS-Can | Info-Can 2019 Annual Meeting on June 2nd-4th at McGill University in Montreal. SPAC is inviting the entire Canadian computer science community (students, faculty and industry) to join them at the 2019 symposium. The symposium will feature a series of inspiring lectures by CS-Can | Info-Can award winners (see the first of the 2018 winners here), a poster session showcasing emerging researchers from every field in computer science and engineering, a set of workshops devoted to addressing challenges facing Canadian computer scientists and engineers and a lightning pitch presentation session. VOLUNTEERING
Image Processing Project Using Python
The Frostad laboratory is developing a new instrument for simulating and tracking digestion of micro-capsules. We are looking for a volunteer to develop image processing algorithms in Python using standard image processing libraries. The volunteer will gain valuable hands-on experience in developing code for real-world applications and if successful would be a co-author on the resulting publication of the work. Applicants should be comfortable programming in Python 2.7 and be able to devote time to working on the project without detracting from their other coursework. Interested students should email Dr. Frostad at john.frostad@ubc.ca.
