Summer 2019 TA Applications Now Open
We're looking for excellent candidates to apply by March 23 at https://www.cs.ubc.ca/ta. Be sure to fill out the appropriate application (undergraduate vs. graduate) for the term you are interested in. Submitting by the deadline is best, but if you submit afterward, the earlier you submit, the more likely it will be considered. If you have some special reason to think the instructor of a course wants *you* for their TA, please apply and then ask that instructor to log in to www.cs.ubc.ca/ta and comment on your awesome application. For our formal job ad, see the bulletin board outside ICCS 201.

LP x CSSS: Project Hub
Pixels, Path Tracing, and Projections: Spice up your website with 3D graphics
Date: March 16
Time: 3:30pm - 6:30pm
Location: ICICS 014
Feel like your websites are lacking in bling and dimensions? Come learn the basics of computer graphics and how to incorporate it into your personal website using Three.js! The workshop will cover concepts like path tracing and projection. Participants are recommended to have some experience with JavaScript.
 
Project Hub meetings occur biweekly and consist of a talk or workshop about a particular technology or skill, followed by an open workspace where everyone can work on their projects, ask for help, network, and explore new ideas - complete with snacks and refreshments!

CSSS Presents Floating Point: A Year-End Cruise
Date: April 6

It’s the end of the year and the beginning of the next! Everyone’s invited to this year’s Year End Gala, out at sea! We’ll be cruising on the water for 3 hours on the Britannia, departing near Stanley Park. You’ll enjoy a full-service bar, a catered dinner, games, a raffle, a DJ, dancing, and the company of your friends!

MAPS 2019 Programming Competition
Date: Sat. March 16th
Time: 9:00am - 2:00pm
MAPS is an open, online, 5-hour, ICPC-style programming competition organized through Mount Allison University and hosted on Kattis. MAPS features an original problem set and can be completed individually or in teams. All the relevant information can be found at the following site: https://bit.ly/maps-rocks
 
Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) Course 
Information Session: March 19, 2018, 12:30pm, HA 234
 
Students in the CDL Course will work directly with early-stage massively-scalable science/ technology companies. This course is designed to teach students about the formation, financing and management of massively scalable companies through a series of close interactions with early-stage companies and their mentors.
 
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with or strong interest in the commercialization of early-stage technologies. This can be demonstrated by:
Experience working with a technology/science startup
Completion/currently enrolled in a technology entrepreneurship course
Previous experience with commercialization related topics (R&D roadmapping, IP filing, grant writing, ethics application development, budget allocation, strategy & operations, marketing, etc.)
Interest in pursuing careers in entrepreneurship, strategy, innovation, new product development

Women in Data Science Conference
Date: Thurs. Mar 21
Time: 4 pm to 8 pm

The Global Women in Data Science (WiDS) Conference aims to inspire and educate data scientists worldwide, regardless of gender, and support women in the field. This annual one-day technical conference provides an opportunity to hear about the latest data science-related research and applications in a broad set of domains. It is open to all genders. There will be 3 speakers followed by a career panel with 6 or so data science professionals, videos from Stanford's main event, food, and a networking session.

Last Call for Undergraduate Research Participants – Indigenous Initiatives at CTLT

The In/Relation team is seeking undergraduate students to participate in a focus group regarding your experiences learning Indigenous topics in the classroom. No prior knowledge of First Nations and Indigenous studies is necessary to participate, but if you have this knowledge or perspective, we also encourage you to attend. We are mostly looking for undergraduates with a willingness to share thoughts and opinions. Free pizza will be provided at the event for all attendees. LGBTQ2+ Launching into Tech Meetup

Diversity in Math Undergraduate Summer School at UBC

Dates: July 22nd - August 2nd, 2019

Applications are now open for "Diversity in Math", a two-week outreach summer program devoted to enhancing the presence of under-represented groups in STEM fields. The program is open to female-identified undergraduate students studying mathematics or a related discipline such as computer science, physics and statistics. The purpose of this program is to introduce the undergraduate participants to a wide variety of professions and careers. Mentorship is an important component of the program. Undergraduate participants are expected to interact with senior mathematicians in academia and industry, and also act as mentors for high school students around the Lower Mainland who are considering a STEM-based career. The application deadline is April 1, 2019.
 
VOLUNTEERING
 
UBC Let's Talk Science Girls Coding Workshop at John Oliver
We're looking for a few enthusiastic volunteers to help us introduce girls in grades 6 to 9 to coding! In this six-week program, students will learn to write Python code to draw things using turtles and make simple games, as well as program Micro:bits.
When: Tuesdays 3:30-5:45 PM from mid-April to late May
6 weeks total, exact dates TBD (most likely, we will start on April 23).
