9 Things I Hate About Microsoft Maps App Navigation

9 Things I Hate About Microsoft Maps App Navigation

  1. Downloading a single country's offline map (e.g. Germany) takes almost an hour!

  2. Downloading offline maps isn't performed in the background. When I leave the Offline Maps Settings panel, downloading stops!

  3. Even after having downloaded the corresponding offline map, Map app's address search doesn't find any address when no network connection is available! Search just bangs its head against no response and aborts with no result after a minute.

  4. When navigation starts, the map's scale is set to a large value, so the whole route is getting displayed in just a tiny fraction of the app's window! There's plenty of unused space left around the route!

  5. The pin displaying my current position disappears when I zoom in or out of the map by pinching the touch screen to get a closer look to where I need to turn left or right!

  6. The Maps app doesn't automatically zoom in when a turn point is in vicinity.

  7. If you select "pedestrian", the apps directions still say "drive" instead of "go"!

  8. Used on a 2-in-1 notebook, when you close the lid (i.e. Surface Pro keyboard), navigation halts! So it's impossible to walk with the notebook safely and keep getting audible directions!

  9. In 50 % of all times, when I close the lid while navigation is running, I hear a notification coming in (I guess it's "tap here to continue navigation" – the lid is closed, so I don't know for sure) and Windows crashes. (Yet, this particular annoyance could be a driver issue.)

Conclusion

In its current state, the Maps app, navigation, and offline maps are useless. They don't provide any helpful service whatsoever.
