About

Markdown is a set of structured plain text syntax, that can then be parsed by apps into an eye friendly format, while maintaining plain text underneath the hood so document contents can easily be searched by standard tools. Markdown comes in several dialects and flavors, with the most common features being universally implemented. Markdown was invented by John Gruber with input from Aaron Swartz (1986–2013). It has grown into a common standard, being the default for Readme documents on github, Wikis, and elsewhere. Although, markdown can be written and read easily in any text editor, this document provides a list of apps and plugins for easier creation and reading of markdown documents intended for being in a fully rendered format, as well as reference guides to the markdown syntax.
