Route requests to ElasticSearch to authenticated user's own index with an Nginx reverse-proxy
# Run me with:
#
# $ nginx -p /path/to/this/file/ -c nginx.conf
#
# All requests are then routed to authenticated user's index, so
#
# GET http://user:password@localhost:8080/_search?q=*
#
# is rewritten to:

This script installs a .mobileprovision file via bash (no GUI session needed)

# This script installs a .mobileprovision file without using Xcode. Unlike Xcode, it'll
# work over SSH.

# Requires Mac OS X (I'm using 10.7 and Xcode 4.3.2)

Unicode Normalization
import java.text.Normalizer
/**
* Problem: Characters with accents or other adornments can be encoded in several different ways in Unicode
* However, from a user point of view if they logically mean the same, text search should make no distinction
* between the different notations. So it's important to store text in normalized unicode form. Code below shows
* how to check if text is normalized and how you can normalize it.

Node.js TCP client and server example
/*
In the node.js intro tutorial (http://nodejs.org/), they show a basic tcp
server, but for some reason omit a client connecting to it. I added an
example at the bottom.
Save the following server in example.js:

var net = require('net');

Compress PDF files with ghostscript

This can reduce files to ~15% of their size (2.3M to 345K, in one case) with no obvious degradation of quality.

ghostscript -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dPDFSETTINGS=/printer -dNOPAUSE -dQUIET -dBATCH -sOutputFile=output.pdf input.pdf

Other options for PDFSETTINGS:

  • /screen selects low-resolution output similar to the Acrobat Distiller "Screen Optimized" setting.
  • /ebook selects medium-resolution output similar to the Acrobat Distiller "eBook" setting.
  • /printer selects output similar to the Acrobat Distiller "Print Optimized" setting.
  • /prepress selects output similar to Acrobat Distiller "Prepress Optimized" setting.

Example Nginx configuration for serving pre-rendered HTML from Javascript pages/apps using the Prerender Service (https://github.com/collectiveip/prerender).Instead of using try_files (which can cause unnecessary overhead on busy servers), you could check $uri for specific file extensions and set $prerender appropriately.
# Note (November 2016):
# This config is rather outdated and left here for historical reasons, please refer to prerender.io for the latest setup information
# Serving static html to Googlebot is now considered bad practice as you should be using the escaped fragment crawling protocol
