as your friend figured out there is quite an easy fix for this. we can get this in and you can try compiling again and let us know if it works. we'll get it for you early tomorrow EST. feel free to holler if it looks like we forgot 😄

@kevinkreiser
Copy link

i cant reproduce this on my machine! it seems to be complaining that it cant convert from Point2 to PointLL. The reason is has to convert is that bit that has a_ + c. See PointLL inherits that from Point2 but it naturally returns a Point2 and not a PointLL. On my system this seems to get automatically converted but not on yours. My gcc version is 5.4 and it compiles without issue... Lets see if we can boil this down to a smaller program to get at the issue directly. What happens when you put this code:

#include <utility>
#include <iostream>

struct foo : std::pair<float, float> {
using std::pair<float, float>::pair;
foo operator+ (float x) const { return {first + x, second + x}; }
};

struct bar : foo {
using foo::foo;
};

template <class T>
T add(const T& t, typename T::first_type o) {
T corge = t + o;
return corge;
}
template foo add<foo>(const foo&, typename foo::first_type);
template bar add<bar>(const bar&, typename bar::first_type);

int main(){
bar baz{1,1};
bar qux = baz + 1;
std::cout << qux.first << qux.second << std::endl;
bar quux = add<bar>(baz, 1);
std::cout << quux.first << quux.second << std::endl;
return 0;
}

and compile it with g++ -std=c++11 a.cpp? does it create a.out and can you run it with ./a.out?

@kevinkreiser
Copy link

i should note that we shoudl be able to fix this by providing an assignment operator for PointLL that takes Point2 as an argument but I thought the compiler gave us that by default.

@kevinkreiser
Thanks for the quick an detailed response! I played around with your example for a while but unless I add a + operator to the bar struct similar to this in foo, it's not compiling. I now installed gcc5 just to be able to verify it should compile.

Your code compiles with gcc6 with gnu++98 and c++98 when changing the curly braces to normal parentheses, although, some warnings appear (warning: inheriting constructors only available with -std=c++11 or -std=gnu++11). It does produce an out file which is executing correctly. Odd stuff.

@kevinkreiser
Copy link

that is extremely odd. we were basically making use of constructor inheritance which became available in c++11... very confusing! ill try this out on a newer ubuntu (hopefully newer gcc) to see if that shows anything...

given that you are on arch, are you compiling gcc from source? if so is it possible there is some kind of gcc configuration flags that make this happen? sorry im really not an expert on arch!

I have the same problem with Ubuntu 17.04:

Have you any solutions? Otherwise, I try to change your source.
