René Gerónimo Favaloro (La Plata, July 12, 1923 - Buenos Aires, July 29, 2000) was a prestigious Argentine educator and heart surgeon, known worldwide for being the one who developed the coronary batiste with the use of a saphenous vein.
The
first bypass was performed on neck arteries by the Argentine neurosurgeon Alfredo Carrea in 1951, in Buenos Aires. Favaloro and his brother endeavored to improve the general level of health in what was then a remote region. They trained and educated
the general public, teachers, and nurses and improved health-care delivery. They equipped the town with an operating room, X-ray and improved the laboratory thereby providing essential surgical and diagnostic tools.

In 1975, Favaloro founded the Favaloro Foundation, along with other collaborators, which is also a training center where students from different parts of the world study and where every two years the Cardiology congress is held for the Consultant.
In 1980 Favaloro created the Laboratory of Basic Research, maintaining it with own money for a long time, dependent of the Department of Research and Teaching of the Foundation Favaloro. Subsequently, it became the Basic Sciences Research Institute
of the University Institute of Biomedical Sciences. This was the basis of the creation, in August 1998, of Favaloro University.
In 1992, the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery of the Favaloro Foundation, a non-profit organization,
was inaugurated in Buenos Aires. With the motto "advanced technology at the service of medical humanism", we offer highly specialized services in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery and cardiac, pulmonary, cardiopulmonary, hepatic, renal and bone
marrow transplantation, as well as other areas. Favaloro concentrated his task there, surrounded by a select group of professionals leaving the Güemes Sanatorium.
