ah convert uses inkscape to convert svg to png
point it at the .git of your local clone of moarvm/coverage for the "extract" command, then run it with "graph", and it'll create a crapton of png files in your CWD

So yesterday I was whinging because there wasn't an easy way to style code parts in InDesign to have syntax highlights. Turns out it supports PCRE in paragraph styles to apply substyles. moritz: using "montage -geometry +0+0 -tile 1x" on all the activity graph .png files gives you a very tall image that you can sub-select images from in css, and then you can optipng the big png file to compress it down a whole lot
without optipng the montaged png file is only half as big as concatenating all .png files into one
and with optipng -o7 (not very heavy on the cpu) it's between a third and a quarter big
have a blank.png that you copy to have the given filename
it could feel faster if the pngs had a height attribute so it wouldn't make the columns jump when they individually load

what browser are we trying to support by providing png support in addition to svg support on the docs site, OOC?
[Coke], pngs can be dropped IMO. They were likely added 'cause IE8 wasn't supporting it, but it's been EOLed by Microsoft since January. Everything else supports it: http://caniuse.com/#feat=svg
if you can't use your text based browser directly for pngs, I'm not sure that counts as a reason, either. if there was a standalone svg file, would that suffice?
where does that need to remove pngs comes from again?
how much resources does png generation take?
In general, I like inline (except for Any); having separate .svg external links alongside the .pngs would be a nice to have, aye

RabidGravy: do we want to keep resources a hash with keys like 'libraries/p5helper' and 'images/foo.png' or do we want to follow the spec that would make it nested like $*RESOURCES<libraries><p5helper>?

I guess we could use { "images": ["image1.png", "image2.png"]} for directories, i.e guess that an array means we're dealing with a directory. But that's less future proof

azawawi++ indeed for doing something useful - me, on the other hand, I'm just generating pictures of camelia ( https://github.com/cygx/p6-image-png-inflated/blob/master/camelia.p6 )
Zoffix: do you know if removing camelia from the list of images that get put into the spriteset would make it significantly smaller? it'd at least make the image only 1/8th as wide, but i imagine png compresses blank space somewhat efficiently?
flussence, what's failing? You might need to apt-get install libpng12-dev to get the sprite thing to work
Zoffix: huh, Imager is failing in t/t10ft2.t, that's freetype2 and nothing to do with pngs...
At least as .png images (on the site we're base64ing it, which I'm guessing adds size)
Zoffix: do we have an optipng step in there?
i said "do we have an optipng step"
after concatenating all the images into the tile png
and i forgot to say: the first thing optipng does is reduce the bit depth or even make a palette if it can do so losslessly
basically optipng makes png files as small as they can reasonably be
optipng is similar to pngcrush, I think
timotimo, that would save us 3KB, based on my pngcrush results :)

adu: btw the next thing I'll be looking at after zmq is libpng which I actually have specific uses for atm...was just using zmq as a test cuz I'd played with it in the past and I know it's something people think is cool
adu: and libpng has some __extension__ thing in it...when I grep that out, there are some other failures though...things like "typedef unsigned (*in_func) (void *, unsigned char * *);" which is a syntax I'm unfamiliar with but I think it's actually part of zlib which gets included via gcc -E

what is supported is things like this: https://github.com/tadzik/steroids/blob/master/assets/invader.png
i once made something fun where i arbitrarily defined that all sprites are equally sized and i put a list of names into the comment field of the svg, which ended up in the png as a comment and then i could load the png and at the same time parse out the comment tag to get the names
so you do self.load_spritesheet('invader', 'assets/invader.png', 72, 32, 7);
I was thinking of just cheating and using pngs... :P
