sudo apt-get remove nvidia* && sudo apt-get autoremove
This went well, no errors. Then I added a new file, /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau.conf
blacklist nouveau
blacklist lbm-nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
alias nouveau off
alias lbm-nouveau off
sudo reboot
sudo stop lightdm
sudo apt-get install dkms fakeroot build-essential linux-headers-generic
sudo apt-get build-dep nvidia-361
sudo apt-get install nvidia-361
sudo reboot
*Also, remove nomodeset command-line call from Grub!
*Also, note: using 16.04, linux kernel 4. Have a feeling this helped over my previous tries with Ubuntu 14.04
