Contessa's Simple Guide To Effective Moderation

The Contessa Test For Effective Moderator Management

  1. Do you have a central rulebook?
  2. Do you train new mods?
  3. Do you have a centralized and persistent moderation log for recording actions and observations?
  4. Do you have a communication platform for the mods?
  5. Do your mods check over each others' actions on a regular basis?
  6. Do you have a method for people to submit appeals?
  7. Do you have a method for people to ask for mod assistance?
  8. Do you regularly assess each moderator's quality and activity?

The Contessa Code For Effective Moderation

  1. Ensure that every facet of your moderation activity is strictly business, not personal. Do not favour your friends or hurt your enemies, and do not ban others for humorous purposes.
  2. Use your powers to serve the community, not rule over it. Make sure you are active and are courteous to community members, even rulebreakers.
  3. Work with your colleagues as a team. Keep everything civil when discussing mod actions or policy. Never unban someone behind a moderator's back without getting explicit permission from a superior authority. Communicate with your colleagues and keep descriptive logs of your actions and observations.
  4. Keep confidential information private.
