Open Robotics is an organization that develops open source code that powers robots. They have two main products, ROS; a framework that enables different components of the robot to communicate with each other with ease and Gazebo; a robot simulator that facilitates rapid testing and prototyping.
Google Summer of Code is an program organized by Google that pairs open source organizations with students. Thousands of students spend their summer developing code for open source organization, improving their software skills in the process and perhaps spark their interest in contributing to open source projects in the long run.
