Blog post for the ID blog

At Industry Dive, we send A LOT of email. We send daily blasts to tens of thousands of subscribers between 7 different verticals. Which puts us in an interesting position. Not only do we have a lot of data about what devices people read their email on, the data is broken down by vertical. This allows us to see specific trends based on industry.

So we sat down and started sifting through the data to try and find some trends concerning how many people are reading email on their smartphones. The trends are pretty clear - mobile is on the rise!

Visualizing the RetailDive and FoodDive data, we can see that mobile is gaining quite a bit of traction in 2013

RetailDive (weeks between 1-2-2013 and 7-29-2013)

FoodDive (weeks between 1-2-2013 and 7-29-2013)

In July, 6 out of 7 of our verticals saw over 40% of readers using mobile devices to read their email

Industry Mobile Desktop Web
Construction 45% 27% 28%
Education 48% 31% 20%
Food 43% 46% 11%
Marketing 41% 40% 19%
Retail 45% 36% 19%
Utility 41% 38% 20%
Waste 36% 44% 20%

The biggest takeaway here is that mobile is huge. It's almost to the point where half of our subscribers for every vertical are reading our content on their phone. At IndustryDive, we've built email templates and mobile websites that look teriffic on mobile in order to get in front of this trend.
