Ghostly (v1.0.x, Oct 2026) is a peer-to-peer messenger by Miguel Medeiros that uses the Mainline DHT for rendezvous. Here's how it stacks up against Signal.
- No phone number, no account, no server. Contacts meet through a one-time invite, find each other via Pkarr records on the Mainline DHT, then talk directly over WebRTC, Iroh or HyperDHT. There's no operator to subpoena or shut down.
- Bitcoin-native payments in chat. You can send sats over Cashu, Lightning (NWC, LND, CLN), Lightning addresses, Fedimint, Ark and Spark. Signal only offers MobileCoin.
- Opt-in identity proofs. You can link Nostr, OpenPGP, SSH, domain, DID or Bitcoin-address keys per contact, and each proof is verified on-device. It also has separate local profiles and passphrase-sealed backups to S3-compatible storage.
