Solves: "LookupError: unknown encoding: hex"

When trying to run android-python27 APK example from https://code.google.com/p/android-python27/ , I got an "LookupError: unknown encoding: hex", on phones Android 4+ (on Android 2.3+ the defauld version works). Playing at adb shell, discovered the root cause:

>>> import binascii
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
ImportError: Cannot load library: link_image[1891]: 8804 could not load needed library 'libz.so' for 'binascii.so' (get_lib_extents[742]: 8804 - libz.so is not a valid ELF object)

So, copied over a pure-python version from https://bitbucket.org/pypy/pypy/src/f2bf94943a41/lib_pypy/binascii.py , and adapted to use python code as fallback to binary one. It just worked!

Usage:

  • copy this aside of binascii.so, and rename binascii.so to _binascii.so
  • pack, sell and profit.
