Installing And Setting Up Arch Linux to Dual Boot Alongside Window 10

Newb's Guide to installing Arch Next to Pre-installed Windows 10

The steps I took to dual boot Arch Linux alongside the preinstalled Windows 10 that came with my new Lenovo Ideapad. I used Ubuntu exclusively for the last 6 years so I'm Window's illiterate. I don't know a whole lot about the inner workings of Linux either.

Pre-Instllation Steps

Prepare the preinstalled Windows to share the system.

Verify the boot mode...

"Reboot to {OS}" scripts for rEFInd Next Boot selection

Reboot to {OS}

This a collection of notes and files used in my quest to create "Reboot to Windows" and "Reboot to Linux" scripts (and desktop shortcuts) for Linux and Windows respectively that automatically reboot my system and instruct rEFInd to auto-select the appropriate OS entry.

General Information

The key for achieving this is to modify the EFI Variable PreviousBoot with GUID 36d08fa7-cf0b-42f5-8f14-68df73ed3740, which rEFInd uses to store the last entry selected in the menu and, if using the + default entry, will be used to select the default OS. By doing this, we trick rEFInd into booting the OS we choose without having to be physically there to press the keyboard.

Making WhatsApp desktop application portable

Portable desktop WhatsApp

You start multiple instances of WhatsApp using --user-data-dir flag providing the full path to the directory. For example:

E:\Temp\Whatsapp>WhatsApp.exe --user-data-dir=E:\Temp\Whatsapp\number1

or by creating a shortcut with the flag.

KeePass2 Setup and Auto-Synchronization Guide

KeePass is a password management utility for Windows, Linux, and Mac.

The first section describes the steps needed to setup KeyPass2 in Linux and how to add FireFox and Chrome plugin integrations.

The (optional) second section documents a robust way to automatically synchronize the password DB across multiple devices.

NTFS filename fix

If you happen to write to NTFS partitions using non-windows operating systems (such as with ntfs-3g, see this thread for more info), some of your files may have got written containing invalid characters in their names. When such a thing happen, the fix of chkdsk is just to delete them but clearly no one would ever want to have their files deleted to 'fix'!

This little script that I wrote aims to fix the invalid NTFS characters in batch and automatically by renaming the files with invalid characters to valid ones. It only fixes the characters in this set: <>:"\|?* which is pretty enough for most of the problems, but for advanced cases (like reserved names 'com', 'lpt') you must fix manually. Always double check the batch mv commands before running.

Fallacies:

  • Does not fix reserved names in Windows (like CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1, COM2, etc).
  • Does not fix other illegal combination of characters like 'directory name cannot end with
