Mod1 Gear Up Takeaways

Growth Mindset

Discussing mindset and how we handle challenges is always important. This was a big part of my previous career but I think it was helpful to consider how I would handle challenges and maintain a growth mindset as a student. Sharing with our partners was helpful because they ended up being the people who supported and pushed us to be our best throughout the mod.

Learn to Pair

Collaboration is an essential skill, and I appreciate that the time is taken to support us in developing the skills to ensure we create strong working relationships. I love that DTR is a 'thing' - that structure and expectation has pushed me to speak up about my needs and has resulted in great partnerships.

Working with Introverts, Extroverts, and Ambiverts

It was great to have the space to strengthen relationships with classmates by learning more about them. I have taken the Myers-Briggs several times, but always get a lot out of a discussion with a new group. How people operate and where they get/lose their energy is an important thing for me to be cognizant of as I continue at Turing and beyond. It's equally important to know myself and be aware of the (good and bad) implications of that when working on a team.

Strengths and Storytelling

The series of questions we answered was a helpful step to writing our stories. I enjoyed, and was challenged by, sharing my story with my peers. I am looking forward to working with Meg and a mentor as I move into Mod 2 to further clarify where I want to go with my career!

Debugging the Gender Gap

I learned a lot from this session. The movie had so many compelling stories, many of which resonated with me. The discussions were helpful to open my eyes to different perspectives. I had no clue that some men really didn't think/know that women wre underrepresented in tech, generally underpaid, undervalued, etc! Being one of three women in our class has definitely presented it's challenges; while it's scary to face some facts and hear the realities of many women in tech, their courage and tenacity is inspiring and I do think about some of the role models on a regular basis when I find myself struggling with that.

Developer Identity

I thought this session was extremely helpful - this can be something that would be easy to push back because we are all so busy, but I am glad we got the time for it. Being new to tech, I had no idea how to put myself out there, so this was a great starting point.
