Goal: all users will be able to effectively navigate the CARTO Builder user interface for basic map and analysis creation which can then be shared out.

Getting Setup

Once logged into your account, let's upload some data so we can explore the Builder.

  1. Go to this page: https://team.carto.com/u/stephaniemongon/viz/90f76244-61a0-11e6-a63c-0e3ff518bd15/public_map
  2. Click on the down arrow to grab the .carto file on this page
  3. Drag and drop this file to your CARTO account to get started

New UI

Tour of the Interface

Layers

  • Basemaps on the same level as data layers
  • Layers are associated with datasets, and their derivatives

layers

Layers documentation

Elements

Map overlays are map elements such as annotations, description text, overlay pictures, etc. All of this coming soon.

Widgets

Two ways to add them

  • Data list on a layer
  • Widgets tab on the layers panel

More about these later, but this is where you add interactive quantitative elements to your map. They can be added from this menu or through the DATA tab in any data layer.

widgets

Read more about widgets in documentation.

Analysis

Many common analysis operations accessible through the UI.

  • Analyses can be chained
  • Analyses are re-run if underlying data changes
  • Analyses produce new columns, different geometries, or something entirely different

Dave and Stuart today will give a more thorough introduction. There is a longer section on this tomorrow.

analysis

Read more about analysis in documentation.

Styles/Cartography

Parity with the Editor, but way more flexibility. Mamata and Steph will be explaining all of the exciting innovations here and introduce the revamp of the existing possibilities.

Legends

Amazing legends, totally redesigned, interactive, and responsive to map interactions.

Sharing, etc.

Four options for sharing out your map and data:

  • Link to public page
  • Code for iframe embed
  • link for using CARTO.js with your map, for v4 alpha version
  • link for using the CARTO Mobile SDK

Requesting new features, reporting bugs

CARTO is open source, which means that you can look at our source code. Most importantly, though, you can make it a better platform.

hey @ohasselblad, can you change the title to remove the 'The'? We should always use it without (e.g photoshop vs the photoshop) and we're including this page in our partners newsletter

thanks very much!
