How many candidates are standing in UK elections in 2016?

2016 Elections – Candidate lists

One Democracy Club (DC) plan for 2016 is to create candidate lists for all 2016 UK elections (much like we did for the 2015 general election (GE2015) with https://yournextmp.com). Last night @ Citizen Beta (Cß), Mark Longair rightly flagged that this is quite (very) ambitious! I realised I have no handle on just how ambitious i.e. how many candidates we’re talking.

The Electoral Commission have a list of upcoming elections: http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/find-information-by-subject/elections-and-referendums/upcoming-elections-and-referendums

Below are the numbers I’ve found so far for each.

Northern Ireland Assembly election

218 candidates stood in 2011.

National Assembly for Wales election

184 + 261 = 445 candidates stood in 2011.

Scottish Parliament election

129 members (so perhaps 650 candidates?)

London Assembly election

88 + 123 = 211 candidates stood in 2012.

NB Wikipedia already has names of 40 + 58 = 98 candidates

London mayoral election

Wikipedia lists 7 candidates from 2012. Unless I am misreading, it appears to suggest there will be “dozens” of independent candidates in 2016?

United Kingdom local elections

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_local_elections,_2016

Umm… Lots and lots. It’s complicated.

Other Mayoral Elections

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_local_elections,_2016#Mayoral_elections

Elections happening in: Bristol, Liverpool, Salford.

England and Wales police and crime commissioner elections

192 candidates stood in 2012.
