To my grandma
My grandma was a rad lady. Here are things I heard she did during her life, some of which may or may not be accurate:
Grew up in Iowa, helped build bomber planes during World War II, caught my teenage mom smoking in the basement, singlehandedly defeated Hans Gruber at the Nakatomi Plaza, would read that one "Sesame Street" book where Big Bird steps in a bunch of tomatoes and go "SPLAT!" and always make me laugh even if I asked her to read it to me ten times in a row and singlehandedly taught me the importance of comedic timing, worked in radio selling ads and occasionally being on the air, singlehandedly defeated the Cobra Kai, took the train into Chicago as a 19-year-old woman (very scandalous in the 40s), taught me to love reading, taught me how delicious Kraft macaroni and cheese always will be, singlehandedly defeated the Decepticons and saved the Earth, cried when I sang in competitions when I was a youngster and pushed me to study music for awhile thus leading me to the path I am on now, totally let her grandkids illegally shoot fireworks off in front of her house, talked me out of getting in trouble that one time when I lit fireworks into oncoming traffic outside of her house (really, what was I thinking?), singlehandedly defeated Khan (in both timelines), said she thought my Nebraska state outline tattoo was "pretty cool" which totally annoyed my mom, helped make me a good person, helped make everyone a good person, took me to Catholic mass "early" on accident and then say "well your parents said I had to take you to church, and we literally just did that, so we can leave now" and taught me the importance of loopholes, taught me you can be glamorous in your 80s, singlehandedly blew up the Death Star when it was about to blow up Yavin IV and end the Rebel Alliance thus leading the way to defeat the Galactic Empire, always had a fridge with Cherry Coke, once when I was like six said you would let me buy any stuffed animal in the stuffed animal store and I ended up finding this huge snake and it was like $100 in early 90s money and you stuck to your word and still bought it for me, would constantly take me to bookstores when I was a kid and let me buy stuff even if it wasn't "young adult," was a mom, grandma and great-grandma to a huge number of kids who are better having had her in their lives.
I'm going to miss you, grandma. I'm happy I got the chance to make you laugh and be proud of me. I know you weren't religious, and neither am I, but I'm happy knowing you're going to live forever because you've touched so many lives and created so many memories. This one's for you:
SPLAT!
