Monerokon identity proposal

I've read in #monero-events that the call was for:

designs for logo, graphic style, poster, banners, t-shirts, other promotional materials 50% upfront and 50% after submitting files graphic proposals by the end of March, beginning of April files to print by mid/late April

I agree those are very good to have an idea of what the public of a Monero conference might like. They're kinda hacker, many have dar backgrounds so it reminds of a terminal, punk bands, revolutions, retro-futuristic fonts, bold colors, and usually very text heavy. With that in mind, but also many of the concepts that I think of when I think of Monero, after playing with it all day I came to this one:

Here's my v0.13.37 of the logo

I see as the logo as the fundation of the rest of the branding. My thought process was to respect as much as possible the famous Monero "M" and the colors.

Here it's applied to some of the stuff we'll need:

The process

I'll share my process in case you see some fork in the path that you all think it's best and I took the wrong turn. So I started with the logo for the proportions:

monerokon-logo-wip-0

I like from Rehrar's original Monerokon logo the idea of dots. I don't know if it was his initial intention, but I wanted to use circles to symbolize different people coming together in one place. Monerokon is a gathering. So I'm respecting the negative space of the M and its thickness which is super recognizable, and play with it. You can see that if I try to make the dots even it doesn't work and you lose that M:

So let's keep the funky spacing. Now the colors. I went with the usual orange and grey combo with a twist. Since the dots symbolize us Monerians, I wanted to make them all different (like we are all) yet not totally different (because we all have Monero in common after all). So orange it is, and as a bonus track, the cariations on orange kinda look like skin tones.

The original uses the "official" Monero colors, the modified is a tweak of both orange (to be bolder) and grey (to be lighter) so the focus is on the M and not the text, but this is highly subjective not important.

Now about the font, again coming from the original, I'm deciding two things, first to call it "Monerokon" and not "Monero Konferenco" in the logo. I think we all call it like that and looks better, it's shorter, and punchier. It's our own DEFCON, but with that Esperanto twist on the K. Second thing, I decided to ditch the angular nature of Futura, and look for a rounded yet similar font. Similar enough to be familiar. I found Nunito, which uses the Open Font License, so I understand we're good. Same about the caps, decided to go small caps because the all caps options were too imposing. (Bonus points, the M in Nunito has straight lines, just like the M from the logo, which the original font doesn't.)

Then trying the logo on both color and pure black (that's always useful for printed docs, cheaper shirts, etc)

monerokon-logo-wip-4

Also those simplified versions over dark background, like our references:

monerokon-logo-wip-5

Being simple, this logo is very versatil, and we can modify it to different uses while keeping it recognizable, like for example different versions for different roles, either in t-shirts or signals:

roles in color Conceptually, STAFF shows the inner workings of the machinery, SPEAKER are those spreading knowledge to their peers, and PRESS are the ones connecting between us. We could also modify those in color-blind-compatible tones, so public on the floor can easily spot them.

Then adding information to it, like place, year, description. The full one, and a simpler one. I like to use the name of the city in their local language if possible.

monerokon-logo-wip-7

Final tweaks, adopting a sequential number, instead of Monerokon2023 going for the CCC-style Monerokon3. Also modifying the k so it doesn't stand out and leaves symmetry between the M and the 3, and lastly, a variation on the extra colors so they're not that pinkish and more orange-ish. This is the one you saw at the beginning.

Regarding the scope of the rest of the materials, they would be based on this overall graphic concept. If there's interest I can make a detailed list of promised materials along with budget, adding original art to match the style, and around 3k EUR paid in Monero OF COURSE.

Please comment, critize, remix, and whatever. I'm also willing to collaborate if the community wants to mix the strenghts of several of us, of course!
