Feedback Conversation Reflection

Feedback Conversation

Date of feedback conversation: 3/22/18

How did you prepare for the conversation?

  • I wrote down some salient bullet points in my journal to help me stay on track during the conversation.

How did the conversation go for you? What was easy about the conversation? What was more difficult?

  • I find feedback conversations difficult. I wind up getting sidetracked and talking about easier subject material. It was easier for me to receive feedback than it was to give it. I tried to stick to the bullet points I had, and give actionable feedback to my partner.

What principles of feedback did you use in the conversation?

  • I noted my reactions to the feedback I received and tried to separate the triggers I had and listen to what was actually being said. Our feedback conversation was not long, and we worked well together on the project, so there weren't many triggers. I did get some good actionable feedback that has helped improve my CSS.

What is your biggest challenge when giving feedback to someone else? How do you want to overcome that challenge?

  • I have been working on making sure that all the feedback I give is actionable. I don't struggle with specific, or kind, but it sometimes is hard to frame feedback in an actionable way.

How would you describe your ability to communicate feedback? How has this experience affected your communication skills?

  • I am getting better at communicating feedback in particular. I think that just being aware of how you deliver feedback will start to change how you communicate. Specifically, I have been trying to group feedback into categories and then distill down the things I want to say prior to the conversation. This has bled into my other communications.
