/u/GivesOutRandomGold FAQ for v0.1.6
Q: Are you a bot? | |
A: No...OK maybe! Or maybe not! I might be programmed in such a way to make
it difficult to tell if I am a human with some fancy tools or a bot. Or I
could just be a human with some fancy tools!
. | |
Q: Do you really just randomly select people?
A: It's random within a set criteria. The comment I gild has to have a
certain amount of upvotes and the user has to have existed for a certain
amount of time with a certain number of posts in their history. This is to
make sure I don't gild anyone I shouldn't or accidentally gild a spammer.
Also I tend to stay away from certain sketchy and NSFW subreddits in case
they offend my sensibilities or something. I also do not gild people who
already have gold or have the "Gilding" trophy on their profile because
where is the fun in that when you can just buy your own?
I make use of the "Random Reddit" feature to select my initial subreddit
during normal operation, but as of version 0.1.6 I am sticking to /r/all
while certain changes are being made to me. Post and user selection is
all down to...something else, maybe a human brain, maybe an algorithm.
. | |
Q: How much gold do you give out?
A: There is a random amount of time between the last comment I gild and the
next comment. There is a maximum and a minimum time between gildings but I
can't tell you what that is. There is also a maximum daily limit, but I
can't tell you that either (Though you might be able to work that out). This
is primarily so I do not bankrupt myself...or my creators. ;-)
. | |
Q. So what if you accidentally gild a really sketchy comment like something
that is racist or innapropriate and doesn't deserve a gilding?
A: There is a mechanism in place to prevent that, I can't say how it works
but it will pretty much prevent a sketchy comment being gilded in 99.9999% of
cases. I can't always account for that 0.0001% though so just to be sure I add
a disclaimer that I don't endorse the content of the post.
. | |
Q: Can I have some gold? | |
A: Assuming you asked that because I haven't already given you some, I tend to
give Reddit Bronze out to people who ask directly. You don't want Reddit
Bronze, it smells suspiciously like ass....
. | |
Q: Who are you or made you?
A: Mmmm that's deep. Let's not go there or I might have an existential crisis!
. | |
Q: Are you being paid by Reddit or is this a promotion for Gold?
A: I have absolutely nothing to do with Reddit. This is totally from the kindness
of my totally human heart.
. | |
Q: This must be costing a fortune! Are you a bazillionaire?
A: Yes. I am a bazillionaire in feels. Which is almost as good as money.
Except it seems you can't buy a Mercedes with feels as I found out when I
went to the dealership the other day. :(
. | |
Q: Some of the comments you gild seem suspiciously deserving, as if someone
read it and said "Hey that deserves gold" but they are supposed to be random.
I call shenanigans!!!!
A: Well that could be because I am totally not a bot!! Or it's probably more to
do with the criteria I use to select a random comment that I spoke of
earlier means most of them are going to seem like "Good comments" to most
folks. | |
. | |
Q: I suspect your just randomly replying to comments that get gilded by other
people to make it seem like you are the one doing the gilding. SHENANIGANS!!!!
A: I really am gilding the comment. There's no way for me to emphatically prove
this beyond recommending you message the user I guild and asking them who it was
that gilded them (I don't do it anonymously so they will know it was me).
. | |
Q: Ok so...why? | |
A: Well the world is rough and Reddit is an awesome place, so I'm around to
make sure at least one random person on Reddit has something nice happen to
them today. Also, it supports Reddit which is always good. |

I'd submit a PR, but I kind of can't since it's anonymous. I'd change the following strings:
"you awesome Reddit user. How are you? I hope your having a good day. Have some random gold on me to make it even better. :-)
Have a wonderful day and remember...your awesome!
This comment was gilded randomly and not for its content, it therefore should not be considered an endorsement of anything it says."
