Chapter 2

Section 1

  1. Health skills are tools and strategies that aim to positively affect one's health.
  2. Two interpersonal communication skills that can reduce one's health risk are refusal and conflict resolution.
  3. Advocacy is the attempt to influence others in addressing a specific belief or issue.
  4. It's important to analyze behavioral influences to assess how decisions are made and ultimately improve the process so it leads to healthful outcomes.
  5. Advocacy can raise awareness for a health issue and encourage others to participate in healthful behaviors to prevent it.

Section 2

  1. Decision making skills help you make better, more healthful choices.
  2. One would set a health goal to attempt to remedy a health issue or generally improve an aspect of health.
  3. An example of a short-term fitness goal is walking a certain number of steps every day. An example of a long-term fitness goal is to eventually be able to run a marathon.
  4. If a teen made a decision against her personal values, she would likely be dissatisfied with her decision and unenthusiastic for following through with the decision.
  5. Responsible decision making generally leads to better health outcomes which in turn help in the achievement of health goals.

Section 3

  1. A health consumer is a user of health-related products or services.
  2. Comparison shopping allows the judgement of products in context and makes it easier to choose an effective choice.
  3. A warranty is a guarantee made by a vendor to refund or repair a product during a certain period.
  4. Susie is being influenced by "celebrity" and "great outdoors" marketing strategies.
  5. Understanding warranty allows consumers to take advantage of it when it applies and make better buying decisions by taking it into account.

Section 4

  1. Consumer advocates help make a better health product ecosystem by upholding consumer rights.
  2. Malpractice is the negligence by a health professional to meet standards.
  3. Health fraud is the deceptive use of marketing of a product which has not been proven to be safe or effective.
  4. Taking an active role when dissatisfied with a product or service can improve it or expose its failures for the benefit of other consumers.
  5. Many of the claims associated with health fraud involve a quick and easy cure for a common difficult-to-treat health condition.
