# Chapter 4
## Section 1
1. Perception is awareness derived from sensory processes.
2. Cognitive stressors for teens include poor self-esteem, personal appearance, and fitting in.
3. The stress response primarily involves the nervous and endocrine systems.
4. Stress can motivate you to do positive things that you would neglect without it.
5. Stress can temporarily increase physical strength by directing blood flow to major muscles.
## Section 2
1. Chronic stress is long-term stress caused by a stressor that an individual feels they have no control over.
2. Strategies to avoid or limit stress include refusing to take on new stressful activities, planning and managing time effectively, thinking positively, and avoiding drugs.
3. Relaxation techniques include deep breathing, getting a massage, and redirecting the energy to a sport.
4. Ariana might spend Wednesday with Connor then study for the test on Thursday.
5. By controlling one's response to potentially stressful stimuli, perception of the stimuli can shift toward a positive or neutral experience, rather than a primitive threat.
## Section 3
1. The stages of grief are denial or numbness, emotional release, anger, bargaining, depression, remorse, acceptance, and hope.
2. Coping is struggling and dealing successfully with difficulties.
3. Traumatic events include deaths, accidents, and natural disasters.
4. With a death caused by a long-term illness, there is time in advance to prepare knowing that the death is imminent so there is less shock when it happens.
5. In the movie Black Sea, Tobin, homeless and grieving after his friend's suicide, eagerly joined the treasure hunting crew when Robinson informed him of the plan. He channeled his energy into helping with the mission and not living a life like his friend Kurstin. He is a bit depressed at first, but soon recovers with Robinson's mentoring help and fits in with the crew. Tobin deals with his grief in a positive way and recovers from Kurstin's suicide.
# Chapter 5
## Section 1
1. Anxiety is a state of uneasiness or worry about future events.
2. Depression can be caused by a medical condition, a traumatic event, or a harmful environment.
3. Depression can cause trouble with concentrating or making decisions or induce self-destructive thoughts.
4. The medical condition "depression" is prolonged and constantly negative, as apposed to "feeling down" which is intermittent and easily goes away: for example, feeling bad about scoring poorly on an exam isn't depression, but a general state of sadness over a period of a week after traumatic event may constitute depression.
5. To help a friend that may be depressed, it's best to talk to an adult who may have the friend see a health professional.
## Section 2
1. A stigma is a mark of disgrace or shame that can discourage people from seeking medical help for mental disorders.
2. Anxiety disorders include phobias, OCD, panic disorder, PTSD, and GAD.
3. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that can cause hallucinations.
4. Mental disorders should be viewed like physical illnesses because their stigmatization has only negative effects including discouraging treatment.
5. Eating disorders are caused by mental problems but have physical effects.
## Section 3
1. Alienation is the state of being or feeling isolated, especially socially.
2. Two risk factors with strong associations with suicide are depression and substance abuse.
3. Warning signs of suicide include obsessions about death, withdrawal from social circles, boredom and apathy, change in personality or appearance, neglect of hygiene.
4. Direct: "I don't want to be alive anymore.", "I want to just die.", "I don't feel like living anymore"
Indirect: "I'm tired of it all.", "I don't care anymore.", "I can't bear it any longer."
5. Cluster suicides are a series of suicides in the same area in a short time caused by encouragement by the other suicides.
## Section 4
1. Behavior therapy is a treatment process that aims on changing unwanted behaviors.
2. Neurologists treat physical disorders of the brain.
3. A teen could reach out to a school psychologist about a mental health problem at school.
4. You can protect yourself by surrounding yourself with good friends that will notice mental health problems and help.
5. Having a positive outlook increase resilience by making it harder for common negative things to make you feel sad.
# Chapter 6
## Section 1
1. Three types of relationships are relationships with family, relationships with friends, and relationships in the community.
2. Citizenship is your conduct as a member of your community; an example of good citizenship is helping neighbors move in.
3. The "three Cs" of a healthy relationship are communication, cooperation, and compromise.
4. Relationships with family members can provide social support, encourage physical health training, and aid in mental/emotional health issues.
5. During the course of a day, I play many different roles in relationships, including son, student, classmate, teammate, friend, and neighbor.
## Section 2
1. Four ways to show respect in a relationship are listening to others, being considerate of others' feelings, developing mutual trust by being honest and dependable, and being realistic in expectation.
2. Stereotypes are exaggerated representations of a group projected onto its individuals.
3. Teens may bully each other to feel superior, to be part of a group, or to keep from getting bullied themselves.
4. An example of how demonstrating strong values can strengthen relationships is how if you are always dependable to get favors done, you'll be trusted more by your friends.
5. Hazing differs from bullying in that it is specifically targeting those joining a group.
## Section 3
1. The three main styles of communication are aggressive, passive, and assertive communication.
2. You can show interest in what another person is saying by making eye contact, nodding, or making small comments.
3. Body language is a method of nonverbal communication where information is expressed physically, for example smiling and making eye contact shows you're interested.
4. Other people who don't like to be left out of decisions or get tired of Leah's intolerance of other opinions wouldn't like to be friends.
5. Having strong communication skills is important for personal health and safety because communicating efficiently is vital in preventing conflict and dealing with emergencies. When working with high-risk, especially if many things are happening quickly, good communication skills are necessary to give clear instructions so things don't go wrong due to a communication error. In a dangerous situation, communicating your needs quickly can also be important to your immediate health. It's generally safer in tense situations to have strong communication skills to prevent misunderstanding.
