During the 1770's, the second continental congress sent the Olive Branch Petition to King George III requesting to settle their differences peacefully without The Olive Branch Petition. In May of 1775, the Second Continental Congress met to discuss the ongoing problems between Great Britain and the colonies. The Olive Branch Petition of 1775 was the drafted during the Second Continental Congress after the Battles at Concord, Lexington and Bunker (Breed's) Hill. The Olive Branch Petition, drafted on July 5, 1775, was a letter to King George III, from members of the Second Continental Congress, which represents the last attempt by the moderate party in North America to avoid a war of independence against Britain. John Dickinson drafted the Olive Branch Petition, which was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 5 and submitted to King George on July 8, 1775. It was an attempt to assert the rights of the colonists while maintaining their loyalty to the British crown. The petition may also be referred to the “The Second Petition to the King” or “The Humble Petition” (Olive Branch Petition). The outcome and reactions to the Britain’s King George III, however, refused to receive the petition, which, written by John Dickinson, appealed directly to the king and expressed hope for reconciliation between the colonies and Great Britain.
