I too faced this error :
return (a > b) - (a < b)
TypeError: numpy boolean subtract, the `-` operator, is not supported, use the bitwise_xor, the ^ operator, or the logical_xor function instead.
To fix this, I typecasted it to float :
def cmp(a, b):
return float(a > b) - float(a < b)
