We have a back lane/entry/alley/ that runs along the back of our house in North Belfast. It was gated by residents (before our time) and as such provided a place for kids to play and connect. I used to love the way the kids would call for each other along the back entrances. They could ride bikes and scooters off the road, play hopscotch and tip - hide and seek. We have even had a children's birthday party in the lane!<br><br>When we were thinking of selling our house, I used to bring prospective buyers out there and say 'You know, I would never have thought when I bought the house, but this space has been such an asset!" (we didn't end up moving). You see, our red-brick terrace has only a yard, so the lane has provided so much more space, and (with 6 kids) we have gratefully spilled out into it…<br><br>And now Covid. Covid where our houses become our whole worlds (if we are lucky enough to have them). Lockdown has seen us transform our lane into an even more social space, one that adults are beginning to use as well. We have brought old chairs and plant pots and fire pits out there and sat our well into the evening with friends and neighbors. All of our birthday gatherings this year have been held there.<br><br>And yet, there is a niggling doubt at the back of my mind, an uncomfortability about the fact that we have had to enclose this space, to gate it off, in order to use it. What does that say about how we build communities? How does that fit in to the ancient idea of common land? Do I have to have exclusive use to something in order to put time and energy into it? I don't have answers to these questions, but they are things that I think about. ]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[It has 4 entrances, backs onto our terrace row gardens with harding on the other side. We are surrounded by backs of houses on all sides which creates a sort of courtyard effect with our gardens and alleyway. Everyone uses the alleys for bins as well as access to the school pick up points and the Cregagh Road.<br><br>Most of the people have lived here for a really long time and they are very good at keeping it tidy. Because of that, we let the kids play there sometimes, it’s a great long space to run and skip and ride your bike.<br><br>Unfortunately because one side is wide enough to drive down, we do get the occasional fly tippers and a year or two ago we had an issue with a local guy using the alleyway to inject heroin. He’s not been around for a while. The rental properties on the other side are less respectful and tend to care less about the alley being tidy.<br><br>The row neighbours are house proud and we have chatted at times about applying to have it gated to keep it maintained without it being wrecked. It gets loads of sun and would be a fabulous ‘wildflower alley’ sort of set up. I love our alley.]]></description>

To start gardening in their alley, they scrounged free stuff and built raised beds, with a view to growing food and herbs. Some items were donated to them. There are horticultural officers for N, S, E & W Belfast. The West Belfast officer came out and steered them in the right direction. <br><br> They started to grow veg and raised their profile using a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ThreeSistersGroupBelfast/). They got compost and seeds and distributed things to other neighbours who weren’t yet involved. Because it was visible, others asked if they could do it at the bottom/back of their streets/houses too and it grew from there. They looked at Wildflower Alley for inspiration, and thought this could be extended into back yards too.<br><br>One complaint they have is that landlords are not taking responsibility for the condition of their homes. Furniture/white goods are being dumped in back alleyways. They suggested having tougher repercussions for landlords that are using the area as a dumping ground. ]]></description>

We organised a socially distanced ‘alleyway athletics’. The alleyway was the perfect location. Wide enough to stay apart and free from traffic (apart from the odd van now and again). Now kids can’t play in the street safely, alleyways are the perfect location for them to play.]]></description>

We organised a socially distanced ‘alleyway athletics’. The alleyway was the perfect location. Wide enough to stay apart and free from traffic (apart from the odd van now and again). Now kids can’t play in the street safely, alleyways are the perfect location for them to play.]]></description>
