When you removed the mbtowc() calls, you made a critical mistake here:

  	do {
- 		l = mbtowc(&d, optstring+i, MB_LEN_MAX);
+ 		d = optstring[i], l = 1;
  		if (l>0) i+=l; else i++;
  	} while (l && d != c);

Previous behavior: if the loop has reached the end of optstring ((optstring+i) points to the NUL terminator), then mbtowc() returns 0. Then l is 0 and the loop terminates.

Modified behavior: l is always 1, and the loop accesses past the end of optstring until it either:

  • faults
  • happens to find a character in memory matching c, causing incorrect behavior (all characters are valid options)
