3. Exalted (kind of): A Better World
This is a weird one:
Probably best for a quite small group, this is a politics/economics
game set loosely in the Exalted setting (but not using the Exalted
system at all). For those of you who aren't familiar with the
setting, basically it's a fantasy world which had a lost golden (?)
age in which humanity was ruled by demigods called Solars. The Solars
were alleged to be corrupt and overthrown by the Dragon-Blooded
(different, lesser demigods), who themselves ruled the world for a few
centuries. Now new Solars are being created again.
You would play Solars who have decided that you do not actually dig on
ruling people per se, and are not interested in raising an army to
destroy the Dragon Blooded. Instead, you thought you might try to
make the world a better place by going around to the various little
communities and kingdoms and using your powers to make things better
-- and then move on before you either draw the Dragon Blooded to turn
the area into a battleground or become de facto rulers.
Players would have the ability to train people supernaturally well,
allowing you to do things like turn a group of farmers into incredibly
gifted alchemists in the course of a few days. You are quite capable
of doing things like personally overthrowing a ruler you judge to be
unjust. You can help them set up infrastructure and dig canals in the
course of days. You come into the community, make decisions about
what to change, make those changes, and then see what comes of the
place.
But you have powerful enemies who can crush the "little people" who
you hope to help. The more interventions you make in the local area,
the more attention you bring to the area. We use a Jenga set to
simulate this: every time you make a big noticeable intervention in
the area, you pull a block from the tower. If the tower falls, then
the Dragon Blooded send an army over here, and let's just say the
community is not better off.
This is a game for people who enjoy making maps, imagining weird
economies, and judging ethics. I don't think there will be good
niches for more than 4 people on the outside -- 3 might be better.
