Dear scotchit reader,
As you are probably about to read one of my reviews, I will keep things short at first and explain
more in the end. Here's the criteria I take into account. All of those are scored on 10,
and I calculate a compound score from those, going up to a 100 points.
- Nose
- Taste
- Finish
- Complexity:
I think that the difference between a good scotch and an average one lies in the complexity.
Some will be "good", but won't have to offer a lot of different flavors.
Older drams are more likely to score better here... but that's not always true :)
- Subjective Factor:
Sometimes I'll like something. Sometimes I won't.
I can't help it, so I try to remain accurate before that part.
But in this sections I just ask myself if I'd drink another glass or not, and why.
If you're not too fussy about all of that, you can just go back to the review,
but for those interested in more details about the why and what, keep going.
It should be said that I'm fairly new to scotch, as I've tasted about twenty to date.
However, I've always been a foodie, and have a good palate... and this is why I'm starting to review
the classics to give a bit of time for my palate to adapt to the aromas scotch offers.
After that, I'll be tackling the goodies.
Now, let's talk about the elephant in the room, that is, scores. I use the whole range I'm given
and don't just give points for showing up (If I get courageous enough to review the worst ones ever made,
maybe you'll see how low it gets). 75+ is a fine drink, and I'm probably already resisting the urge
of buying a bottle, primarily because I have no shelf space left (and my liver can only do so much).
I haven't rated any 90+ just yet. This is probably the point at which I will dream about a particular bottle of scotch.
You'll notice I don't rate the color. It's mostly a distration for me, as drinks are processed through
the senses of taste and by extension smell. Heck, I'd drink a green scotch
(although that's not quite likely to exist).
Also, please note that (all) reviews are inherently subjective. I attempt to account for it in my
subjective factor and keep the rest unbiased, but I can only do so much. If you like the same
things as I do, you're likely to also enjoy my higher subjective factor scores. If you don't,
you can ignore it, although if you do, I recommend you get a taste at your local bar,
just to be on the safe side.
Any feedback is always welcome as a reply to my posts or as a PM.
Cheers!
