Braindead

Some things won't stay down... even after they die.

"Dead Alive, " also known as "Braindead" internationally, is a cult classic that blurs the lines between dark comedy and horror. Directed by Peter Jackson and set in 1957, this New Zealand-made film is a wild ride where the undead meet the grotesque. When the protagonist's mother is bitten by a peculiar Sumatran rat-monkey, she becomes the embodiment of nightmare fuel. She comes back to life, only to eat and kill everything in her path—including a number of the people closest to our protagonist.

The movie is not for the faint-hearted, but has earned a cult following for its unique blend of humour, gore, and fantasy elements. The Sumatran rat-monkey, a fictional creature that serves as the film's central antagonist, has been compared to the iconic King Kong, with which director Peter Jackson has deep ties.

The film's rating of R and a runtime of 1 hour and 44 minutes might seem brief, but this is a movie that packs in a lot of suspense and gore. It has been compared to classics in the horror and zombie genres, such as "Dawn of the Dead, " "The Return of the Living Dead, " and "Evil Dead II, " despite its dark comedy elements.

"Dead Alive" has won four awards internationally and earned seven nominations, showing the critical and popular acclaim this film has received. The movie's limited theatrical releases and the censorship issues with the DVD versions add to its mystique. This film is definitely not for everyone, but its unique blend of genres has ensured its enduring cult status.

The Frighteners

No Rest for the Wicked.

The Frighteners (1996) is a darkly comedic, fantastical, and terrifying horror film directed by Peter Jackson. Following the tragic death of his wife in a car accident, Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) discovers he can communicate with the dead.

Armed with this newfound ability, he uses it to scam gullible people by convincing them they're being haunted by ghosts. However, things take a sinister turn when a demonic spirit, Johnny Bartlett (Jake Busey), starts murdering the living and the dead.

With the help of Dr. Lucy Lynskey (Trini Alvarado), Frank embarks on a mission to stop the malevolent spirit and protect Lucy from becoming his next victim.

As Frank's own dark past begins to haunt him, he must confront the consequences of his actions and face the horrifying truth that lies beneath the surface. With memorable performances from its talented cast, The Frighteners explores the blurred lines between reality and the afterlife, while delivering a unique and chilling cinematic experience.
