Description Score Criteria
If any of these are true, subtract one point
Are teachers requiring students to:
Have their video on some of the time?
Have their video on all of the time?
Have their audio on some or all of the time?
Maintain 'eye contact' during the video?
Assigning grades or points to students who have their video on?
Assigning grades or points to students who maintain 'eye contact'?
Conform to a dress code during real time video sessions?
Is participation in real time video the primary means of tracking attendance?
If the video session is part of a hybrid instruction model, are remote learners expected or required to stay online during class activities where the remote learner can't participate?
Does the teacher use gimmicks or tricks (Let's have a dance party!) to entice students to turn their camera on?
Is any class participation grade based on maintaining a presence in a real time video session?
Subtotal 1: negative points
If any of these are true, add two points:
Can the student turn off their video without negative consequences?
Can the student turn off their audio without negative consequences?
Does the teacher provide a video of the core elements of the lesson that students can access asynchronously after the real-time video session?
Does the teacher encourage and support questions and feedback via email?
Does the teacher encourage and support interaction by chat or text within the video session?
Does the teacher support multiple means of showing that a student is present (ie, emailing the teacher, signing into the class LMS and leaving a message, etc) that don't require video?
During real time video meetings, does the teacher create space for student comments and feedback using both video or text-based chat?
If a student is unable to attend a real time video session (ie, due to taking care of a sibling, internet issues, hardware issues, or other common life events) do they have asynchronous options to review what was covered in the class?
If a student is unable to attend a real time video session (ie, due to taking care of a sibling, internet issues, hardware issues, or other common life events) can they access class resources without fear of negative consequences?
