THe message that I am recieving when I read this is that we need to be more selective where we work. Here is this buy who left his journalism career to start a new adventure in tech/marketing and he is super excited to start working at HubSpot. He quickly realizes that things arent what they seem. This is a good lesson for us to learn as we should be looking for a place that fits our personality and needs. It was evident that on the surface, HubSpot was a great place to work but actually working there was no cup of tea. They would constantly dance on the ethical boundries of creative marketing trying to caputure the attention of its users and track what interests them so that they can better target the "next" email or promotion. How he was let go is not isolated to Startups. I have seen this happen to many mant people. This is just the compnay trying to protect its ass and make him out to be the bad guy. It's unfotunate but it is a reality we might all face one day. I think the lesson is to keep your integrity and try and bow out as gracefuly as possible.
