Lane Splitting Information

The reality of rear-end collisions

Videos showing motorcycle rear-end collisions that might have been avoided by sharing

You might notice that most of the riders in these videos only suffered injuries. There's a reason for that. Dead riders don't post to their YouTube accounts.

Target Zero

Washington State Strategic Highway Safety Plan

Can Washington reach Target Zero without considering motorcycle safety? Given the number of motorcycle-involved collisions every year, I do not believe it can. If the State Legislature takes Target Zero seriously, they must consider the safety offered by lane sharing.

WSDOT and Federal Highway Administration HOV policy

Why motorcycles are allowed in the HOV lane

Both WSDOT and the FHA acknowledge that keeping motorcycles moving and out of stop-and-go traffic makes them safer.

Lane Sharing Abroad

Lane sharing is extremely common globally. Here are some examples

Traffic congestion

Data showing reduced congestion when Motorcyclists lane share

You already lane-share with bicycles

Motorcycles are the same width

Cars already lane-share too!

Passing a car on the right while it waits to turn left is extremely common

Common Concerns

  • Safety is an excuse. Motorcyclists just want to cheat in traffic.
  • Is lane sharing unfair to car drivers?
  • What happens if a lane sharer damages a car?
  • Won't lane sharing frighten other drivers?
  • Does lane sharing make it legal for motorcycle riders to speed?
  • Will lane sharing lead to motorcycles weaving in traffic?
  • If a motorcycle is lane sharing, how can I see them coming?
