VirtualBox Host-Only Adapter with Static IP

VirtualBox Host-Only Static IP

My typical setup for a development box in VirtualBox uses two NICs. The first uses NAT to allow the box to communicate with the outside world through my host computer’s network connection. (NAT is the default, so shouldn't require any setup.) The second is a "host-only" connection that allows my host and guest to interact.

To create a host-only connection in VirtualBox, start by opening the preferences in VirtualBox. Go to the "Network" tab, and addd a Host-only Network. Modify the host-only network, and disable DHCP. Make a note of the IP address. (Feel free to set the IP address as well, if you like.)

Next, assign this host-only adapter to the virtual machine. Select the VM and press "Settings". Go to the "Network" tab, and select "Adpater 2". Enable the adapter, set it to a "Host-only Adapter", and select the adpater you created above.

Instructions for setting up git server on Synology Diskstation

Configure Synology NAS as Git Server

Instructions for setting up a git server on a Synology NAS with Diskstation. Specifically, I am using a DS414 with DSM 5.0.

Set Up User and Folder

 • Create user gituser via Diskstation interface (with File Station and WebDAV privilages)
 • Add new shared folder called git (located at /volume1/git) with read/write access for gituser and admin. This folder will hold all the repos.
 • Install Git Server package via Diskstation

How to generate and apply patches with git?

It sometimes happen you need change code on a machine from which you cannot push to the repo. You’re ready to copy/paste what diff outputs to your local working copy.

You think there must be a better way to proceed and you’re right. It’s a simple 2 steps process:

1. Generate the patch:

git diff > some-changes.patch

How to detach a process from the current terminal?

Closing the terminal will kill all processes launched from its shell instance that are still running. Here is how to detach a running process and run+detach a new process:

Scenario 1:

Let’s say we have ./long.sh running, and we want to detach it:

./long.sh

Using Selenium and Python to screenshot a javascript-heavy page

Using Selenium and Python to screenshot a javascript-heavy page

As websites become more JavaScript heavy, it's harder to automate things like screenshotting for archival purposes. I've seen examples and suggestions to use PhantomJS for visual testing/archiving of websites, but have run into issues such as the non-rendering of webfonts. I've never tried out Selenium until today...and while I'm not thinking about performance implications yet, Selenium seems far more accurate than PhantomJS...which makes sense since it actually opens a real browser. And it's not too hard to script to do complex interactions: here's an [example of how to log in to Twitter, write a tweet, upload an image, and send a tweet via Selenium and DOM element selection](https://gist.github.com/dannguyen/8a6fa49253c1d6a0eb92

Make crontab send you HTML emails

Any output (to stdout and stderr) generated by a crontab task will be sent to you by email. This is great to generate system reports or be alerted when something goes wrong.

By default crontab (and the MTA it relies on) will use a text/plain MIME type. But you can make crontab tells the mail sender to use another MIME type, like text/html.

Open crontab with crontab -e, and add this line:
