Goals

Goal 1

####Build an independent app in React Where are you at with this goal?

  • Zero or very close. We've built an app together in class, but my grudge bin caught on fire. This is something that I want to do to prove to myself that the grudge bin failure was a fluke, and to learn more about react. What does success look like?
  • Success in the short term would be a functioning MVP app. In a year success would be a completed project that I would put on my resume. List resources available to you including learning resources, blogs, podcasts, mentors, meetups, lightning talk topics, and open-source projects.
  • I've got a couple resources, including:
    • the Wes Bos React Tutorial which includes lots of great tutorials, videos, and files
    • The Facebook React Blog
    • The React KungFu Blog is pretty darn cool
    • And the ReactPodcast is right up my alley
    • No mentors to speak of that I know, thought I do know a couple JavaSctipt developers back home that are willing to pair/mentor me.
    • Things that I'd like to build include the super basic TODO project that would just get me into it, and then I'd like to try something like a tracker app of some kind. Ideally I want the app to talk to another service so it could be like a web interface for your fitbit, or a finance tracker or something.
    • Lightning talk ideas include "Why being bad at React is kind of OK" for a beginner track. I don't know enough about React yet to have very many ideas here. Suggestions?
    • I'm linking to some lists of cool open-source projects
  • This particular project is important to me for a couple reasons. First of all, it's a personal score to settle after fucking up React in mod 4. Secondly It's a growing technology and I want to always be trying to learn one of the "newer" frameworks or languages that is in the tech Meta.

Goal 2

####Learn Python Where are you at with this goal?

  • Zero or close to it. Python was the first language I tried to teach myself. I went back to try an exercism recently and realized I remember basically nothing. What does success look like?
  • A bot that scrapes public government data. List resources available to you including learning resources, blogs, podcasts, mentors, meetups, lightning talk topics, and open-source projects.
  • I have pretty limited resources for this right now, but I plan on being able to add to this list.
  • As I think about getting back into the news/radio world, data gathering, analysing, and reporting is a constantly growing field. Python, from what I hear, is well suited to these types of things, and is used already by many new journalists that are dabbling in programming to improve data reporting. This could be a great language to know to keep my foot in that door.

Goal 3

Continue my own podcast

Where are you at with this goal?

  • I'm currently handing over control of the Turing podcast, so TECHNICALLY zero, but not really. What does success look like?
  • A weekly podcast, with guests covering a range of topics interesting to new and aspiring developers. Ideally the podcast would also grow as I do and follow my journey into the tech world. List resources available to you including learning resources, blogs, podcasts, mentors, meetups, lightning talk topics, and open-source projects.
  • I've got a couple resources, including:
    • I, uh, I don't mean to brag, but I think I've got this covered.
    • There are podcasts like Ruby Rogues, Giant Robots..., Code Newbie, Programming Throwdown... I just don't think any of them are that good.
    • No mentors to speak of - but I do have a strong tie to the radio community in case I need feedback/airchecks
    • Things that I'd like to build include:
      • A podcast
    • Lightning talk ideas include:
      • Why a podcast is good for your company
      • How to make a podcast profitable
      • Why your podcast is boring
      • 5 Important tips for making a listenable podcast
    • As far as I know there is no such thing as an Open Source podcast. This would be logistically difficult Why is this goal important to you?
  • Vocal performance like this is my original dream. Radio and Podcasting was my first love. I'm the nerdy kid that recorded songs off the radio and put together my own DJ shift. I'm going to continue doing something like this, why not make it an addition to the community?
