Career Journal - mod 1, week 5

Mod 1 - Week 5

Habits Reflection:

How have you seen yourself become more aware of your habits? Have you tried implementing anything new? What have the results been?

I am continuing the healthy habits that I started in week 1 and have reflected on previously in this journal. One recent addition is that I am encouraging project teammates to be communicative and clear about expectations for time, meetings, etc.

Design Thinking Reflection: Cultivating Beginner’s Mind

How can beginner’s mind be helpful when it comes to thinking about your career and job search? What are some habits you could put into place to cultivate beginner’s mind regularly?

Beginner's Mind is useful because it helps you think past your old assumptions and ideas. It can help you see a situation with new/fresh eyes. A great way to do this is by asking yourself foundational questions that challenge assumptions. Taking time to think about the "why" is a great way to see something in a new way. It's important to move past how you think something SHOULD be and try to consider what is.

Go through the Flower Exercise brainstorming worksheets linked here. Then complete your Flower Exercise final worksheet here and link that finished worksheet here.

My Flower Exercise

Write out your top 5 strengths that you’ve seen in action this module; then write out the strengths of a software developer. Where do you see these lists overlapping? Where are they different?

Strengths: Analytical/problem solving, Setting clear goals/objectives and following through on them. Effectively explaining complex ideas to others, organization, leadership experience.

*I believe that all of these strengths are important to a successful developer. This involves working effectively with a team, conducting yourself professionally, and successfully meeting technical challenges.

Write a refined vision statement here (what new things have you discovered this week to incorporate into your vision statement?):

Must earn more than my previous job in education, must have a more flexible schedule, and must not have stress that follows me home every night. I must be treated respectfully as a professional. I will have a short commute and earn enough that my partner and I (and our future children) can live comfortably. Perhaps I even work from home a few days each week, although I want to work in an office at least part time so I can be part of a high-functioning and collaboritive team. I want to work in a place where employees feel valued and respected, and enjoy being a part of the team. As such, we are hard working and productive. Due to a focus on work/life balance I am able to be home by five each day to spend time with my family or friends. I want work that gives back to my community in a meaningful way. If I could work for an organization that contributed to addressing education, food scarcity, social justice, etc, I would find that very fulfilling.
