Career Journal - Mod 3 - Week 5

Taking stock of where you are: what have you accomplished this module? What have you learned? Where are you stuck (have you not been able to follow through on outreach? Is your resume not finished?)?

Completing the resume has been difficult because I don't feel like I have much to put on there in terms of coding. It is finished in terms of past experience, but I need to complete and add more portfolio work. On a positive note, I have become very comfortable with React and taught myself a basic level of TypeScript, so that is great for my resume.

Create plans for 3 different companies you want to target:

Plan #1: Quizlet They have a Denver office and they are an Ed Tech company. Not only do I have an education background, I actually used their platform for several years at my last job. There is a Turing alum who works that I have spoken to. They use React and TypeScript, which I have experience with. Working here would be great because it would allow me to still be in the world of education and feel like I am doing something to help kids learn.

Plan #2: Nordstrom They have a Denver office and it is expanding. There are several Turing alum there that I have spoken with. They use React and TypeScript. I also have a good friend who works there (not as a dev), which is a great potential connection. Everyone I speak to says that they really take care of their employees and demonstrate loyalty toward their team. They also have a program called Nordstrom cares with focuses on philanthropy and will contribute toward employees' charitable actions.

Plan #3: Imperfect Foods I do not know as much about this company as the others, but I am passionate about their mission. I also have spoken to a dev who works remotely for them in Denver (and did so pre-pandemic). She described a postive company culture and pride in contributing to their mission. I should get more information about their tech stack and the size of their engineering team.

Make it actionable: rank each plan on a scale of 1-5 for how much your plan aligns with the following: Available resources to help you pursue it: contacts, time, knowledge of the company, etc. Q - 4 N - 5 I - 2

Coherence: how it aligns with your career vision Q - 5 N - 3 I - 4

Confidence level: how feasible does this feel to you? Q - 4 N - 3 I - 2

How excited you are about it? Q - 4 N - 3 I - 4

Now, pick the plan with the highest numbers across the board. What steps will you take next to pursue this strategy as you go into the next module?

*Quizlet is my highest score. I need to see if I can make a connection with anyone else working there (maybe see if anyone else with a Turing background is there). I can also try to connect with a recruiter. I can also do additional research on Quizlet to supliment what I already know.
