Just out of curiosity, which is better for development, Windows or Mac? I personally use windows and haven't used a Mac? So just wanted your opinion ? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1058602237528594/

Why should one get a macbook pro? Haven't used one ever. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1057089381013213/

Alright, Time for a new laptop for College. Mac or PC? Going to college for CS. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1056270107761807/

Whats everyone's take on Arch Linux? Is it worth the struggle? Do you guys feel like you understand unix a lot better after going through the process of installing it all? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1055629284492556/

I know this question has probably been asked a million times, but I'm kind of new to this group. What computer/OS would you recommend for an incoming freshman CS major? I've used Windows a majority of my life, and messed around with Ubuntu and it's terminal. For the past year or two, I've been using Macs and an older version of OS X (Snow Leopard to be exact). I've interacted with the terminal a couple of times and kind of know my way around a Mac. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1055432447845573/

I don't want to start a flame war but I currently own a macbook pro (mid-2012) running Yosemite. My question is whether it's a good idea to switch to Linux. If yes, why and what distro should I use? Note, my experience with linux is minimal but I'm willing to learn. I also have been running Mac OS for the past 10 years and have grown very comfortable with it. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1055147787874039/

Can anyone recommend a good laptop for programming/Dev work under 1,000$? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1054639754591509/

Would you guys agree that Linux (more specifically, Linux Mint/Ubuntu or Ubuntu derivatives) is the best Operating System for people who aren't "power users"? I can't really think of a reason that Linux wouldn't be more beneficial for those with a low technical skill, the install for Mint and Ubuntu derivatives is easier than Windows, not to mention it's free as in price and for all means and purposes has no spyware, viruses, and bugs, that most normal users get. I'd really like to hear some other people's insight on this and what other people think the best Operating System for the vast majority of computer users is. Assuming average computer users are defined as those who use computers for web browsing, word processing, video watching, music listening, and very light gaming and image editing. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1052536588135159/

How many of you guys use Linux as your primary OS? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1052501408138677/

What tools do you recommend me to install on a fresh Windows laptop on which I will be doing web and android dev. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1051848514870633/

Best environment to learn C in? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1051526761569475/

What Linux distribution would you guys recommend if I really want to learn the most about the kernel and how it works along with learning as much as possible about what goes into building an OS? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1051495724905912/

DELL xps 13, the best ultrabook in the market right now? I definitely like the aesthetics but not the cost. Should I buy it now or wait for the back to school/black friday deals? Any other suggestions? I need a 8 gb ram minimum for all the multitasking/programming. EDIT- I travel a lot, the Dell xps 13 is ultra portable, hence fits the bill. Also I love its infinity display. Price range - 800 dollars. Now that I think of it, I'd be ready to shell 200-300 bucks more to get top of the line tech. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1049572438431574/

Hey guys, I have decided to make my own computer for development and gaming purposes. I would love to hear what you guys think of the idea, and any parts/accessories you would recommend and why. Also, I cannot decide what OS I want to install on there, so any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks! https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1048227161899435/

Right. So I'm kinda new to the Linux Platform and I'm considering installing Linux on one of my older laptops. What would be the best distro for coding? I have these ones on my mind but feel free to suggest some other ones. Thanks :D https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1047289438659874/

Why is Emacs and Vim fetishized? Why not use other IDEs/text editors? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1043899172332234/

Which operating system environment is the best to do Android app development and why? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1041437725911712/

I'm about to buy a new laptop for general use and web/general dev work. I won't be using this computer at work as my company will provide another computer but I will use it while at home for my own projects. Right now, I'm between the 2015 13" Macbook Pro Retina and the new Macbook. The Pro is definitely more powerful but I'm not sure I need that much power. The main drawback of the Macbook is clear: single USB-C port. Can anyone offer insights? Anyone have experiences with the new Macbook for dev work? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1039894752732676/

Just recently purchased a new Mac, what are some must have tools that I should download? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1039359802786171/

looking for a new laptop, deciding between the following:

Hello Hackathon Hackers, I need to make a decision about a new laptop for coding, web browsing, itunes and some times a little bit of Photoshop CC 2014. I want something to start from a dual-core 2.4Ghz, 4gb of ram and at least a 512Gb 7200rpm HDD with no touchscreen and ultra-light weight. My budget is going between 700$ and 1200$. Do you have some sugestions? PS: Sorry for my bad english but i am from Romania tongue emoticon Thanks in Advanced https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1030101927045292/

Hi all, I have been saving money for a while for a Macbook Pro. I know it's expensive as hell but the fact that it has a terminal with a smooth user experience and interface as well as iOS dev capability is quite unbeatable, IMO. So, should I buy the current latest MacbookPro now or wait till summer, hoping that Apple will release a new MBP version with better Intel chip and probably a new design? Thanks! https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1030039880384830/

hey y'all! I was wondering if anyone had advice for buying a cheap macbook. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, I would really just be looking for ios dev and an internet machine for taking notes in class. Given this, the 13 in macbook air seems to make the most sense, but I was wondering what's the oldest (read: cheapest) that has the system capabilities to run current versions of xcode. Thanks! https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1024557534266398/

I'm trying to find a new linux distro to use, so I'll ask here: What linux distro most perfectly combines form and function? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1020878901300928/

Should I get a Macbook Air 13" vs Macbook Pro 13" for iOS development? Battery life is a big priority but I also prefer having more USB ports and more memory. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1019812771407541/

Thinking about getting an Ultrabook, wanna drop like $800, any suggestions? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1014802181908600/

Which Macbook you currently own, or getting? Recommendation for first time Macbook buyer? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1010211439034341/

Which laptop do you guys recommend getting for development on the go. Budget under ~$800 Preferably something that VM or dualboot into MacOS smoothly. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1009572682431550/

What desktop operating system(s) are you running right now? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1006964496025702/

Hey I figure this is a good place to ask as any: I've been considering dual-booting (or possibly even fully switching to) Linux with my Windows 8.1 machine. So far the only real appearance I've had with Linux is on a Raspi and, while that was fun, I'm sure Linux has much more to offer. I'm looking for a distro that has a nice, fairly customizable UI (the more the former, less the latter and vice versa) but I'm trying to take full advantage of a Unix dev environment so a well-populated and modern package repo are somethings I'm looking out for. Currently I'm considering either Fedora or Deepin, possibly Arch Linux, but I thought it'd be cool to hear from you guys and gals! Hope ya'll can help. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/1000297636692388/

My lenovo hard drive just died, looking to buy a macbook pro... 13 vs 15 inch? Was looking at base 15 or dual core i7 13, most use for coding, schoolwork, minimal graphics/gaming. Recommendations? https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/995338833854935/

Thinking about moving to Ubuntu on my 2014 rMBP.... Thoughts? OSX is so laggy + my bluetooth peripherals dont connect without my wifi dying :/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/993651180690367/

Hey HH, i resently got into an argument with one friend about which operating system is better for programming (Windows 8.1 or Ubuntu 14.04). We both got really good arguments, however i told him i rather post this question in here to see what other people say about the topic. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/990717874317031/

question why do you guys use linux I use OS X and windows but I don't understand why you guys use linux? Anyone wanna help me? c: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/990159434372875/

Any recommendations for a desktop pc in the $300-$500 range that supports dual monitors? Preloaded OS doesn't matter since it will be a linux machine. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackathonhackers/permalink/983268291728656/
