I like these songs. Your voice is lovely. The piano parts are nice. Your melodies are great.
There are a lot of parts that sound like you're compensating for lack of a band. Particularly in Bells. If you had a band, the piano parts wouldn't need to be as focused on displaying the rhythm, and could instead be providing more melodies and interesting harmonies.
The songs also give a bit of an impression of all being a bit too similar. I suspect that impression would go away a bit if they had more arrangement.
My opinion of the lyrics fell after listening to the songs about three times each. There are a gazillion teenage girls singing vaguely poetic things which sound similar to you. (Note that some of those teenage girls manage to be successful anyway…)
There's so many cliches. You should try to edit those out.
I sent "Ash" and "Breathe with you" to a musician I know. Here's what he said:
"She reminds me of early Kate Bush, with the occasional Sufjan turn. Lyrics were occasionally way-over-the-top pretentious. I didn't like her piano style at first but I think it works with the robin song. Melodic style is actually very cool. I reckon if she worked on making her lyrics more immediate she could become moderately successful."
- No Hausfrau
- Regina Spektor, obviously
- Dresden Dolls, "No Virginia" and "Yes Virginia"
- Acid bass like Elbow
I think this is my favorite.
What do you mean by your "he steals for peace and he cuts down trees and he kills the beast"? "He kills the beast" sounds particularly trite.
The chorus is also a bit cringeworthy too. But I suppose Regina Spektor gets away with stuff similar to that.
"There's a god in the ocean pulling my hair like oh" sounds way too much like a Ke$ha lyric…
I so love the rhythm in the start.
Really cute song. I love the chord sequence over the lyric "Silence" at about 1:50.
The lyric and melody at 2:30 are super cheesy. Luckily, the melody and harmony over the lyric "silence" makes me forgive it.
This song has the most distinct symptoms of needing a band. The piano part is often just simulating the rhythm of a drum kit.
On the plus side, that means that a band would make the song sound a lot more complete.
The lyrics also let this one down a bit.
"Cupid's dust" is super cliche.
Cliche lyrics.
