Meet the EdTechJoker: HAX'ing OER by making any system a learning system

Abstract

I am the EdTechJoker and I'd like you to take my red pill and explore a world where ANY platform is a learning platform. A world where the production of accessible and sustainable OER is possible by anyone on any platform. A world where educator, learner and instructional designer creativity flow like water.

In this session we'll explore that world through the open source editor called HAX being developed by Penn State, the US National Archives and others! We'll look at multiple Penn State courses taught using HAX, see student produced OERs using HAXcms, learn about my digital activism approach to pedagogy and get a chance to play with the HAX editor and see the future of web production.

I am the EdTechJoker and I'd like you to explore a world where ANY platform is a learning platform. A world where the production of accessible and sustainable OER is possible by anyone on any platform. A world where educator, learner and instructional designer creativity flow like water. Welcome to the revolution in publishing, we're happy to have you!

I work for Penn State Office of Digital Learning in the College of Arts & Architecture, building technologies to meet the instructional needs of artists. I am the lead developer of a NGDLE called ELMS: Learning Network and inventor of a open source web editor called HAX, short for Headless Authoring eXperience. I also teach IST 402, Emerging Technologies where I get to test and implement my own creations.

In my course, students learn about the web industry by contributing to it! They build a short OER course on a topic of their choice and contribute UX feedback to HAX in the process. Fall '19 they identified 18 UX issues in HAX, 14 of which were resolved prior to their final project work. Their final project is to produce an OER mini-course on a topic in their college career that they felt was poorly covered through the organization of web resources.

HAX works in Drupal, WordPress, HAXcms and other platforms. It is used by multiple Penn State colleges and is currently being contributed to by The US National Archives with plans to adopt later this year. In this session you'll learn why HAX is revolutionary, who's using it and how you can join the movement that now has had multiple regional events! You'll also learn about my YouTube brand / digital activist approach to pedagogy, and how I use Reclaim Hosting to augment teaching. You'll also get time to play with HAX and see multiple live courses taught at Penn State using ELMS:LN, HAX and HAXcms.

I don't think we can build the best experience for the web; I know we can. We're all we need to change our futures. Join us to make this dream a reality!
