2024年9月

  • WordCamp US 2024 で突如、Matt Mullenweg 氏が WP Engine を批判
  • WordPress.org に「WP Engine is not WordPress」という記事を投稿
    要約すると
    • 「WP Engine は WordPress じゃない」
    • 「あいつらは WordPress のブランドを使ってビジネスしてるくせに WordPress に対する投資や貢献しない」
    • 「コスト削減のためにリビジョンシステムをデフォルトで無効するなど誠実じゃない」
  • WP Engine も公式 Blog で反論「Highlighting Over a Decade of WordPress Contribution and Commitment」
  • WP Engine が Automattic に対して「Cease and Desist Letter (PDF)」を送付（Xの当該ポスト→ https://x.com/wpengine/status/1838350670564377051）
  • 上記を受けて Automattic は、WP Engine でホストされたサイトが WordPress.org の公式ディレクトリにアクセスできないように対抗処置をとる→ 「WP Engine is banned from WordPress.org」
    • 要するに WP Engine を使っていると公式ディレクトリからプラグインなどの更新ができない
    • 記事冒頭の煽りがすごい「"Any WP Engine customers having trouble with their sites should contact WP Engine support and ask them to fix it."（WP Engine をご利用のお客様で、サイトに問題がある場合は WP Engine のサポートに連絡して修正を依頼してください）」

2024年10月

  • Matt Mullenweg 氏の個人 Blog で「Automattic 従業員の中には今回の対応に反対の人たちもいる」「そこで Automattic は従業員対して希望退職オファーを提示したところ、それに応じた 159 人が退職した」と投稿→ 「Automattic Alignment」
  • WordPress.org に「Advanced Custom Fields（ACF）を Fork して「Secure Custom Fields」という新しいプラグインを作成した」という記事を投稿→ 「Secure Custom Fields」
    • WordPress 管理画面（WordPress 公式プラグインディレクトリ）から Advanced Custom Fields を更新すると、「Secure Custom Fields」に差し替わる
    • Advanced Custom Fields を使い続けたい場合の手順は ACF 公式 Blog で案内されている→ 「Installing and Upgrading to the Latest Version of ACF」
    • （参考情報）Advanced Custom Fields は、2022年、WP Engine に買収されている

個人的メモ

  • 自分は OSS 開発者と名乗れるほどの知見はないが、Matt Mullenweg 氏の「感情的な」憤りは理解できる
  • とはいえ、やり方はちょっと無茶しすぎでは？という感想
  • ACF の件は Fork して自分たちでメンテしていくなら別にいいんじゃねと思うし、選ぶのはユーザーだからなんとも思わん
  • WP Engine も WordPress を Fork して、公式ディレクトリ含め自分たち専用にメンテしていけばいいんじゃねの
  • 今回の騒動に関して WP Engine を使ってますって人以外はそこまで大騒ぎするような話じゃないと思うけど、OSS に関するお金設けの話と参加と貢献っていう文化的な部分での軋轢みたいのはここだけの問題じゃないので気になる
