DOs
- play with her before she has anything to eat in the morning.
That way she'll be hungrier for any reward you give her,
and she'll be willing to pay more attention to you.
- try different balls, or balls with squakers inside, or any object really.
What you want at the beginning is to create drive so she will chase it.
Find something that she really wants and tease her for her to grab it.
- As soon as she grabs the ball, say YES! and throw some kibble on the floor by her side.
When she goes for the food, grab the ball and start again.
- start with her leashed. Having to walk to get the ball every time until she
learns is a pita. If she's leashed to you, you can control where she can go,
so you can play longer and get less frustrated.
- use two identical balls. This will help with the drop it part of fetch when
she shows enough interest. What's best than the ball she already has?
the same exact ball that's in your hand.
- make it FUN!
DON'Ts
- don't throw the ball until she really really wants it
