GiveCamp is a weekend-long event where technology professionals from designers, to developers and database administrators to marketers and web strategists donate their time to provide solutions for non-profit organizations.

Austin GiveCamp - Hodge Martin Chatfield Historical Museum

I volunteered with GiveCamp to help a non-profit get some sort of technical assistance without having to pay a significant amount for it. A lot of times these non-profits don't have a lot of money to spend on things that aren't necessarily pertinent to their cause.

The non-profit I had the pleasure of helping out along with 4 others was Hodge Martin Chatfield Historical Museum. Their original website was created by one of the founders of the non-profits nephew who new basic html and css. The site had not been touched since it was created leaving a very early 2000's feel for it.

Since this was a one weekend website build and we had to hand over all products to the non-profit where they could be comfortable enough to fix minor issues we decided to go with Squarespace to put the new build on. This way it allowed the non-profit to make some changes if they would like and this helped us with being the time constraint we were in. We received all pictures and products from the non-profit and got those ready for use. We then started adding adding pages we thought would benefit the non-profit and allwoing them to showcase what exactly they do.

My personal parts that I helped with were getting the domain host and cpanel straightened out along with a new email account setup that the non-profit could use. I then transfered the new site on squarespace to the host so that we could have it ready by the time Sunday rolled around. Once I had those complete I had the opportunity to setup the non-profit's tax exempt Paypal account to allow them to receive donations online which could be a huge benefit for them. On Sunday I came in and completed the Paypal portion and then started adding images to some of the pages and helped with adding some content. We were in crunch time mode and wanted to make sure all content was up on the site so we could get it launched. I also helped with writing the documentation for the portions of the site that I helped on and for their Paypal.

Overall it was a great experience and I got to learn more about this little non-profit and help build something they can use to continue growing their non-profit. Even though there was very minimal coding involved it was nice to get in there and work along other individuals donating their time and helping all different kinds of non-profits.
