Offroad Adventures

Resources

Candidates

Observatory Rock

1.5hrs down highway 285. Drive looks out there looks like a solid 6 or 7.

Start at this point and head South on dirt. Dirt turns into fire trail and circles around rock. Lots of branches so finding fire road will be challenging.

Observatory Rock is scrambleable and should make for a nice hike. Eagle Rock and others accessible on the way out.

Trip can be made into an interesting loop using Matukat Rd to the South.

Cabins, resorts, and raches available not too far in every direction to make a multi-day affair.

Little Bear Creek Ascent

Extreme dirt squigglies just south of Idaho Springs.

1hr to get to the bottom of the ascent by way of Evergreen Lake. 45 minutes to return via I-70.

Great relaxing places to stop in Evergreen and Idaho Springs. Probably some hiking along the ascent or near bottom.

HWY-74/Bear Creek Rd looks gorgeous even before leaving Denver. Taking Upper Bear Creek Rd by Evergreen Lake and using Winter Gulch Rd to ascend up to Squaw Pass Rd looks like just about the maximum amount of paved fun and switchbacks available within an hour of me. Squaw Pass Rd also looks amazing and could be used to shortcut to the bottom of the ascent if entered from I-70.

Can be made into an interstate-less loop by decending from Idaho Springs via Squaw Pass Rd (CO-103, Mt. Evans Scenic Byway, Chicago Creek Rd). Additional routes of decent appear to lead to 4WD areas. This loop goes by at least one zipline place. This loop also allows for a detour up Mt. Evans. Challenging Forest Service Rd available to ascend Squaw Mountain.

Cheesman Lake

Ascend dirt road (Wigwam Creek, CO-211) up Cheesman Mountain to Cheesman Lake. Lots of dirt roads branching off and it looks like you can drive along the dam holding back the lake.

Cicling the lake does not seem to be possible, at least not on motorcycle. Hiking trails available. Looks really secluded. Good offroad trails on either side of lake.

Multiple routes out there via HWY-285 and HWY-67 (thru Sedalia). Multiple full trips possible with little route overlap and all routes providing twisties and scenery. Takes 1 to 1.5hrs for various routes.

Rampart Range Riding Area

Dirt ridge road heading South from HWY-67. Been partially down, but was too cold to finish.

About 45min to North entrance via HWY-67. Full hour to closest South access near Monument Rock via CO-320. Southernmost access is basically Woodland Park/Colorado Springs (HWY-24).

Additional access may be available via CO-105 E, W Jackson Creek Rd 35min away. Very treacherous entrance may be possible via CO-105 E, S Perry Park Rd.

Tons of branching trails. Trails East of Rampart Resevoir may provide secret mountain access to Air Force Academy.

S Grapevine Rd

https://goo.gl/maps/m5L6F4Z44c92

North/South dirt road between I-70 and Bear Creek Rd. Very close (~20min to South entrance). It may be possible if gate is open to ride up trail to Mt. Morrison where several radio stations are located.

Mt. Lindo

https://goo.gl/maps/fLnh2mKoycz

Off S Turkey Creek Rd. Appears to be gated but publicly accessible during certain times.

Dirt ascent. Very close by.

Also right off S Turkey Rd about 1mi South is another dirt climb up a mountain. This one does not appear to be gated and is topped by a radio station (KXKL-FM): https://goo.gl/maps/aarCZfQqVrm

Warren Peak

https://goo.gl/maps/kNmL62ockDx

Close (<45 min) access via Bear Creek Rd.

Dirt ascent. Lots of switchbacks. Vistas and hiking.

S Kuehster Rd

https://goo.gl/maps/tN2oGtSCAXT2

Relaxing looking mountain dirt road. Close (~35 min). Not thru.

Accessible via W Deer Creek Canyon Rd and High Grade Rd. Both paved twisties.

Upper Bear Creek Rd

https://goo.gl/maps/tN2oGtSCAXT2

About 1hr to dirt portion. Just take Bear Creek west of Evergreen until it turns into dirt. Appears to terminate at a campground but may have additional offroad options near terminus.

The Castle / Wellington Lake

https://goo.gl/maps/48qFNfYpCm52

Multiple routes. ~1.5hrs. Dirt roads and potentially lots of offroad trails.

Cathedral Spires Park

https://goo.gl/maps/P6pE5hCCdyP2

1 - 1.5hrs. Paved, but extremely narrow SW Platte River Rd. Looks fun. Mountain river road.

Raleigh Peak Rd.

https://goo.gl/maps/5gjUTZ5VxMM2

Dirt ascent. 1.5 hrs to top.

Colorado Trail at S Platte River Rd

https://goo.gl/maps/saUPTcQSqZ42

Beautiful dirt mountain river road to beautiful hiking. ~1hr away.

Saxon Mountain Rd

https://goo.gl/maps/5AWhDJEwSXz

Crazy steep dirt switchbacks. Via fire/service roads it may be possible to connect with Squaw Pass Rd. ~1.15hrs away.

Guanella Pass Trailhead

https://goo.gl/maps/N6u3wbNMHFk

Beautiful marginally paved mountain pass rd with lots of sights and hiking along the way. Connects I-70 near Idaho Springs to HWY-285 near Grant, so it's loopable.

Argentine Pass

https://goo.gl/maps/a2PNu36kvLo

I think this might be motorcycle accessible. Connected to Guanella Pass via Leavenworth Creek Rd (CO-352).

CO-264

https://goo.gl/maps/fiuFWuuT4u12

Near Motezuzma, CO. Crazy dirt switchbacks climbing out of town and apparently into the wilderness. ~2hrs to Montezuma. Lodging in town or in nearby Keystone.

1.5hrs to trailhead.

Red Cone Switchbacks

https://goo.gl/maps/NS4DD5RfHLM2

Explicit offroad area accessible by following Montezuma Rd South out of Montezuma.

Southern access via HWY-285 only 1.15hrs or so. https://goo.gl/maps/3Yy3y2qKruv

Last Resort Creek Rd

https://goo.gl/maps/daVB1bGTLWs

Gorgeous long mountain dirt road off of amazing marginally paved mountain rd. As little as 45 minutes away.
